Tous les groupes qui durent passent par deux stades diamétralement opposés dans la construction de leur identité : d'abord en quête de reconnaissance, ils multiplient les appels de phares au public en se revendiquant d'influences aussi prestigieuses qu‘éloignées qualitativement de ce qu‘ils proposent. Puis, le succès venant, les voilà qui prennent le melon et commencent à envoyer sur les roses le premier scribouillard qui aurait l'outrecuidance de comparer leur musique avec celle des modèles devenus entre temps des concurrents.
Avec tout juste un an d’existence au compteur, les rhônalpins de REDROCKS sont en plein dans la première phase, leur bio n’hésitant pas à aligner les noms de PINK FLOYD, PORCUPINE TREE, OPETH, mais aussi (je cite) « des artistes moins underground tels que FOO FIGHTERS, INCUBUS, FAITH NO MORE, etc ...» Y’a-t-il ne serait-ce qu'un de ces groupes "underground" avec lequel ces 4 garçons puissent associer leur nom sans trop rougir de honte ou devra-t-on ajouter DEBUT DE SOIREE et LES MUSCLES sur cet inventaire à la Prévert ?
A l’écoute du premier morceau ça semble assez mal barré: guitare qui tourne en boucle, tout comme le chanteur, à la peine, pour un déploiement d’énergie rock aussi poussif que le « Vertigo » de U2. A 50 balais dont la majorité passée sur scène, on a des excuses pour cracher de la rouille. A même pas 30 ça fait désordre ! Heureusement pour eux j’attends toujours au moins le deuxième morceau avant de zapper un album. Et là, divine surprise, le niveau grimpe d’un coup à une altitude stratosphérique! Si limitées sur le premier titre, voix et guitare se font aériennes et subtiles sur le bien nommé « Cosmic Dream ». Révélant tout le potentiel du groupe, cette sublime ballade planante est aussi l’occasion de réduire notre liste de noms-prestigieux-qui-font-vendre à un seul : PORCUPINE TREE. Chaque idée, chaque note, chaque effet sur ce morceau semble avoir été cueilli sur l’arbre à porc-épic. On jurerait même reconnaître le jeu de batterie de Gavin Harrison, puissant sur les toms et délicat sur les cymbales. Pourquoi se contenter de la copie quand on peut avoir l’original, me direz-vous? Et bien parfois, la copie se rapproche de l’original jusqu’à le transcender. Cet exploit, REDROCKS le réédite sur le morceau suivant, « Self-Destroyed Man » qui s’attaque à la facette Metal de P.T. et sur la deuxième partie de « Backdoors » qui laisse s’exprimer la guitare solo avec sensibilité. On est presque au niveau de In Absentia et un cran au dessus de The incident.
Sobriété des arrangements, beauté des plages instrumentales, élégance des mélodies, solidité de la section rythmique et propreté impeccable de la production sont des qualités que REDROCKS partage avec son modèle. Poussant un peu trop loin le mimétisme, il en a aussi les défauts, à savoir un chanteur peu à l’aise avec les parties agressives et une tendance à endormir l’auditeur sur ses ballades les moins inspirées (« Made Of Sands » jolie mais sans grand relief). Ne leur reste plus qu’à s’émanciper musicalement, et vu le niveau atteint en seulement un an, ces 4 gars ne tarderont pas à envoyer promener les journaleux qui leur parleront de STEVEN WILSON.
