Parait-il qu’A SUBTLE UNDERSTATEMENT s’adresse « aux fans de THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, THE FACELESS et WRETCHED » ? Ça tombe bien, j’en suis. Encore mieux : ils sont français ! Là, ça devient carrément bueno. Et pour achever de transformer ma demi-molle en une gaule triomphante, Jérémie, vocaliste du groupe, pose fièrement sur la fiche promo avec un t-shirt IMPENDING DOOM. Que demande le peuple ? C’est donc avec une impatience qui trahit des espérances, des ambitions, que Vestige, un second EP succédant à un premier éponyme paru en 2009, sera passé au crible. Les références sont belles, les moyens techniques mis à la disposition de ce disque le sont tout autant. Ce dernier étant livré dans un digipack au design épuré, on reconnaît volontiers que le combo a tenu à soigner cette sortie. Toutes les conditions sont réunies pour passer un bon moment.
La mise en pratique de ces jolies dispositions révèle pourtant quelques incohérences. A SUBTLE UNDERSTATEMENT joue dans l’un des seuls styles dont je pense connaître par cœur la plupart des tuyaux : le Deathcore. Pour autant, je n’ai vraiment pas l’impression que le groupe se soit embarqué volontairement dans ce style. Les mecs proposent un Metal très actuel, à la pointe de la modernité mais qui tire inlassablement vers le Death et, à moindre impact, le Metalcore. Un mélange stylistique qui aboutit un peu malgré lui vers un Deathcore bourru. « Cronos » initie l’écoute et du haut de ses six minutes, on découvre une formation franche, avec un son impeccable et un super état d’esprit. Problème, il ne se passe pas grand-chose dans cette composition. Son déroulement est cousu de fil blanc. Il n’y a pas d’étincelle, pas de relief. Néanmoins, nos coqs font forte impression pour la simple et bonne raison qu’au premier abord, ces mecs ont la niaque ! Puissance, précision dans l’exécution, chant consistant aux frontières du pig-squeal, la forme prend le pas sur le fond. Puis on réécoute, attentivement et on réalise qu’il manque un fil conducteur, un effet de surprise. « Vestige » et « Gravity » se chargent de rétablir l’équilibre. On gagne en groove, en breaks rythmiques, en harmonies avec un duo de guitaristes (Sheb et Morgan) convaincant. La première piste nommée fait même résonner vers la fin une accalmie fallacieuse de bon aloi. Divers éléments montrent une aisance technique évidente, pas loin de la prouesse. Mais ils sont éclatés, éparpillés et ne durent jamais bien longtemps, tout juste l’espace d’un riff ou d’un blast. A SUBTLE UNDERSTATEMENT a, comme ça, quelques fulgurances mais qui ne suffisent malheureusement pas à contourner le principal obstacle de cet EP : son manque de lisibilité. On a du mal à définir avec précision pourquoi eux et pas un autre. Les riffs s’encastrent les uns dans les autres, se heurtent parfois à un mur, accélèrent, descellèrent, implosent et explosent. A l’endroit exact où THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER réussit les calculs les plus savants, A SUBTLE UNDERSTATEMENT prend sa calculette pour faire 7 + 9. Le talent est présent, c’est incontestable. Il manque juste un peu d’assurance et de liant. Les français doivent oser sortir des mathématiques scolaires pour arriver à résoudre les équations les plus farfelues.
Vestige est donc un EP vraiment encourageant dans sa globalité. Il y’a quelque chose qui fait vibrer dans leurs créations, reste à mettre le doigt dessus. Une fois que les nantais auront dissipé le nuage brumeux qui plane sur leur musique et qui la rend un peu hésitante, nul doute qu’A SUBTLE UNDERSTATEMENT sera alors apte à réaliser de grandes choses. A l’heure actuelle, j’ai encore l’impression qu’ils veulent aller plus vite que la musique. Pour des musiciens, avouons que c’est un comble.
