RHESTUS, ça ressemble fort à un nom d’os du corps humain, vous ne trouvez pas ? Mais vous aurez beau chercher, vous tâter de partout en déduisant péniblement « humérus, radius, cubitus et rhestus ? », ce mot n’a rien d’anatomique. La seule chose qui réponde à cette douce appellation, c’est un groupe de brésiliens, qui traîne péniblement ses guêtres dans le milieu depuis 1993. Un seul album, c’était en 2003. Deux démos et un best-of également, voilà pour ce qui compose une discographie maigrelette. Pour autant, je ne pense pas qu’il eut été de bon goût de changer de voie. Au vu de leur physique peu avenant, se promener en tanga sur les plages de Copacabana aurait été pour eux un échec encore plus retentissant. Du coup, les mecs continuent à faire la seule chose qu’ils savent faire : du bon vieux Thrash des chaumières. Après d’incessants changements de line-up, RHESTUS se stabilise enfin et propose en 2010 son second album, Games Of Joy… Games Of War !
Après avoir écouté une première fois le disque, je me suis posé la question suivante : « et si la pochette n’avait pas clairement exposé le côté décalé et volubile de ces gars, aurais-je fait preuve de la même tolérance ? ». Manifestement, RHESTUS a choisi d’aborder un thème dramatique dans ses compos : la guerre. Et a décidé de l’enrober dans une sacrée grosse couche de sarcasme et d’humour grinçant. Musicalement, ce cynisme n’est pas flagrant ! Mais ce Thrash se raccroche tellement aux branchages de la vieille école qu’on se demande si ce n’est pas délibéré. On sait qu’avec EVILE, WARBRINGER ou MUNICIPAL WASTE, la tendance est de faire revivre les fondations du genre. Avec RHESTUS, il n’y a même pas cette prétention. Les brésiliens font peu de mathématiques et ne semblent pas avoir calculé leur coup. Tout ça est très sommaire, un poil je-m’en-foutiste. Les riffs sont construits au feeling, même recette pour les solos qui se demandent parfois quelle nécessité ils ont à être là. Ces garçons empruntent beaucoup au Thrash de nos contrées, tablant parfois sur KREATOR première période, plus rarement sur SODOM. Ils décident aussi quelquefois de rester entre américains, manifestant quelques symptômes d’ANTHRAX récurrents et un petit côté groovy façon VIOLATOR. Alex dit « Fantasma » possède un timbre assez génial, complètement éraillé et avec un flow dénué de toute cohésion, un peu comme Tom de SODOM sur leurs premiers essais. De bon effet ! L’auditeur, pour sa part, ne peut avoir d’autre ambition que de déguster ces morceaux une bière en main et dix autres dans le gosier. RHESTUS s’en sort artistiquement, parce qu’ils maitrisent le style sur le bout des doigts. Certaines créations sont extrêmement fluides et Rock & Roll (« Trivial Pieces Of Meat »), d’autres comme « Untiring Torturer » sont plus frénétiques et saccadées. L’osmose est intéressante même si l’ennui pointe vite son nez. En fin de piste, « Scars » vient un peu plomber l’ambiance (dans le bon sens du terme) avec sa rythmique lourde et ses guitares psychotiques. C’était le strict nécessaire pour nous tenir éveillé jusqu’aux dernières secondes où il ne se passera strictement plus rien.
Games Of Joy… Games Of War ! n’est évidement pas l’album Thrash de ce nouveau millénaire. RHESTUS est un groupe sympathique bien qu’extrêmement limité, point de vue moyens mais également au niveau créativité. Ce n’est pas le genre de formations qui me fera baver à l’annonce d’un nouvel album. Par contre, si nouvel opus il y a, il aura le mérite d’éveiller ma nature curieuse et de me rappeler au souvenir (ni bon, ni mauvais) d’une première relation qui m’aura quand même fait taper du pied.
