Anciens représentants de l’extrême de la scène de Bergen aux côtés d’ENSLAVED, on ne peut pas dire que HELHEIM ait connu le même destin…La faute à pas de chance, la faute à une musique moins originale, plus directe, plus abrupte, aux changements de musiciens, etc. Le même cortège de circonstances aggravantes qu’ont connues des centaines de groupes avant eux, et c’est bien dommage.
Et pourtant, que leur Black Metal est intelligent et envoûtant... Presque vingt ans de carrière maintenant, mais un cap maintenu coûte que coûte, avec la barre bloquée sur les ténèbres.
Heiðindómr ok Mótgangr ne change pas la donne, mais modifie un poil le cap. Les ambiances poisseuses sont toujours là, mais plus appuyées. Les riffs sont toujours solides, mais encore plus rudes et lourds quand le moment est venu. Car si HELHEIM est bien sur adepte d’une violence instrumentale indéniable, ses musiciens savent aussi composer finement pour nous livrer de véritables perles épiques et inquiétantes. Avec un climat parfois proche de BURZUM, période pré incarcération, et une couleur musicale solidement ancrée dans les 80’s (CELTIC FROST, BATHORY), il se démarque de bon nombre de ses collègues qui ont soit jeté l’éponge depuis longtemps, ou sont tombés dans l’auto parodie (DARKTHRONE pour ne pas les citer), ou encore dans le grandiloquent pénible (CRADLE bien sur, DIMMU évidemment). Jetez par exemple vos deux oreilles sur le monumental et pourtant monstrueux « Viten og mot (årvåkenhet) », et si les guitares ne vous plombent pas les deux tympans sur le champ, c’est que ceux-ci sont hors d’usage depuis longtemps. Cette compo est un modèle de construction à tiroirs, avec une succession de plans se justifiant tous, et une voix qui module à merveille pour ne jamais lasser. Impressionnant !
Mais l’album est rempli de morceaux bâtis sur le même moule, et la force gigantesque du groupe est de proposer une suite ininterrompue de morceaux cohérente, sans presque jamais se répéter. De l’intro phénoménale et progressive « Viten Og Mot (Sindighet) », jusqu’au final atmosphérique « Helheim 8 », la créativité est de mise, et jamais on ne tombe dans les poncifs dont tant d’albums de Black Metal contemporains sont remplis. Mélangeant allègrement tous les sous genres inhérents au style, HELHEIM tente régulièrement des incursions dans le Pagan, le Folk, incrustant ces courants sur une base Heavy très solide, qui leur permet toutes les digressions. Il n’est pas rare au sein d’une même chanson de naviguer entre plusieurs eaux, sans jamais avoir le sentiment que le navire puisse couler.
En 2011, HELHEIM a une sacré carte à jouer, et avec un atout comme Heiðindómr ok Mótgangr dans son jeu, force est d’admettre que la partie est bien loin d’être gagnée pour ses adversaires. Une telle liberté de mouvement et une telle souplesse de composition force l’adhésion, et une fois le LP terminé, on ne peut s’empêcher de s’embarquer à nouveau pour une croisière sombre, certes, mais qui vous emmène au plus près de la lumière. La Norvège n’en finira donc jamais de nous surprendre…
