Cela fait quelques temps déjà que notre Webzine Metal Impact suit J.C.JESS, de Wake Of The Dead, en passant par Extra Time pour chroniquer aujourd’hui le dernier album.
Je dirais de Battlefront qu’il est pour J.C.JESS le disque de la maturité et de la générosité. Maturité par sa production de qualité, un chant maîtrisé, des textes plus profonds et une cohésion du combo qui s’affirme, un formatage, une structure des morceaux qui se confirment.
Générosité, par un album qui offre pas moins de 14 plages pour une durée de plus d’une heure avec en bonus, le DVD du concert à La Roche N’ Roll Fest. Plaisir de voir le morceau « Just On You » joué en live, et de constater pendant le concert, la valeur ajoutée par Dick au côté du capitaine JC.
Côté artwork, on retrouve le côté sombre de Wake Of The Dead, et à croire que le corbeau est de sortie cette année, en ouvrant le boîtier j’ai constaté qu’IN FLAMES avait piqué l’idée d’illustration pour Sounds Of A Playground Fading, eh ! oui, piqué, car le CD de J.C.JESS est sorti bien avant… Bon, passons aux choses sérieuses et écoutons.
« Saviour » et « Walk With Us » tiennent lieu d’échauffement avec une guitare plaintive par moment et une rythmique toujours aussi carrée déminant le terrain pour les soli de JC. Une sirène nous avertit qu’il ne faudra pas tarder à gagner les abris.
Avec « Decline », le chant prend du relief, constat que l’on fera sur d’autres titres, grâce entre autres aux chœurs qui donnent de la profondeur. JC a travaillé sa voix, si je ne me trompe, dans un registre moins aigu, et plus nuancé.
Sur « Remember » aux premières notes de l’intro, je me remember en effet d’un groupe aujourd’hui défunt SENTENCED, période Ville Laihiala, par le jeu des guitares du duo Tenkula/Lopakka. Il se dégage du morceau un mid tempo inhabituel pour le combo, qui se révèle agréable à l’écoute.
« Soldier » : J.C.JESS l’a fait ce titre qui franchit toutes les tranchées, faisant fi des barbelés, rien ne résiste à ce char d’assaut supersonique. Une mention particulière à Caius (batterie), qui franchit le mur du son. Dick et Juju confortent le déluge par leur jeu agressif et tendu. Les doigts de JC courent sur le manche comme Christophe Lemaitre sur une piste cendrée. Belle unité du combo, mission accomplie. La perle de l’album est là.
La marque de fabrique de J.C.JESS se confirme à travers des titres comme « Frontline », « Crappy day », morceaux avec une rythmique bien en place. Avec « Backfire », on trouve tous les ingrédients pour un morceau à interpréter sur scène, avec reprise en chœur du public.
L’incontournable ballade a pour titre « Irreversible Damages », un repos bien mérité pour nos guerriers. Malgré le casque, la mélodie « Don’t try to say sorry/Or to rewrite the story » rentre bien dans le crâne, et la balle ne ressort pas.
« Requiem » décline une interprétation plus sombre avec une voix plus en retrait se faisant écho.
On se quitte avec « First Time I Was Born », un morceau mid tempo avec des notes à la guitare acoustique, une voix bien placée, JCJESS n’est pas qu’une brute sanguinaire et il nous le démontre bien avec ce morceau. Un album réussi.
P.S. : Si j’ai une suggestion à faire à J.C.JESS si l’envie leur prenait de faire un cover de DIO pour l’anniversaire de sa disparition, ce serait de reprendre le titre « Naked In The Rain », il colle si bien à leur paysage musical.
