Pendant « Rarities & Hard To Find » de Rearviewmirror, Lost Dogs reste une excellente sélection de B-Sides, et de leftovers, qui permet de découvrir une autre facette du JAM, et surtout de rester hébété devant la qualité de certains morceaux qui ont été mis de côté.
Tout comme son alter Ego « Hits and History », Lost Dogs est décomposé en deux parties, la première contenant les morceaux les plus musclés et la seconde les tentatives plus délicates. Ce qui, dans le cas de PEARL JAM n’est aucunement gênant, puisqu’ils excellent dans les deux catégories.
Le premier des deux CDs est presque choquant de gaieté. Mais attention, choquant dans le bon sens du terme, car les titres dévoilés suscitent une joie d’écoute presque contagieuse, et se rapprochent plus d’une fois d’illustres aînés.
Ainsi, « Down » nous ramène aux glorieuses heures des College Radios américaines, à l’époque où celles-ci balançaient le REM de Green à longueur de journée. Avec en prime, une petite touche de fraîcheur/candeur à la Plimsouls, pour ces guitares exaltées et pures.
« Alone » flirte avec le ZEP de Houses Of The Holy, avec ce riff acéré, cette batterie plombée et ce chant habité. Les Pixies n’auraient pas eu à rougir de sortir un morceau comme « Whale Song », et Black aurait même été satisfait je pense de cette mélodie amère portée par des vocaux feutrés et des guitares serpentines.
Et bien sur, on retrouve le classique des classiques, qui a achevé bien des concerts du quintette, le très Hendrixien « Yellow Ledbetter », qui aurait pu sans aucun problème figurer sur Ten, au point que l’on se demande même ce qui a poussé le groupe à ne pas l’y inclure.
Le reste est Garage (« All Night », très SONICS, « Hitchhiker », simple et honnête, « Dont Gimme No Lip », qu’on pourrait croire piqué aux STOOGES et/ou RAMONES), parfois bluesy (« In The Moonlight », très inspiré de « D’yer Mak’er »), voire carrément rigolo/sixties (« Gremmie Out Of Control » ses paroles hilarantes et ses chœurs diaboliques). En tout cas, un quasi sans faute.
Le second CD est bien sur plus intimiste, mais tout aussi indispensable. Au rayon des faux inédits, on retrouve bien sur « Wash » et « Dirty Frank » qui figuraient déjà sur la réédition de Ten, quelques singles de Noël bien connus des fans ("Strangest Tribe", "Drifting", "Let Me Sleep" et la reprise de Wayne Cochran « Last Kiss), mais aussi un instrumental trafiqué, « Brother », issu des sessions de Ten dont les parties de chant furent effacées au profit d’une nouvelle piste de guitare, le très éthéré « Dead Man » qui fut évincé de la BO de Dead Man Walking au profit d’un morceau de Springsteen, ainsi que l’accidentel et très Folk « Bee Girl », qui nous rappelle les meilleures heures des Red Hot, et notamment « Breaking The Girl ».
Lost Dogs reste donc le moyen le plus sur d’aborder un autre versant de la montagne PEARL JAM, en s’immisçant dans les aspects les plus intimes de leur personnalité, et ainsi découvrir un groupe qui sait s’amuser, tout en gardant une qualité de musique indéniable. Peu de groupes peuvent en effet se targuer de pouvoir proposer un double album de raretés aussi constant et enthousiasmant, et ce tout en restant le plus varié possible.
Un album en marge qui vaut bien des Best Of officiels de groupes reconnus !
