Cinquième LP pour les frenchies de LYCOSIA, un groupe particulier mais qui garde une constance effarante dans la qualité de ses sorties. On parle assez peu d’eux, et c’est dommage, parce qu’ils ont bien des atouts de leur côté. Une musique personnelle, un son, un look, en gros, tout ce dont un groupe a besoin pour satisfaire de nombreux fans. Moins core que L’ESPRIT DU CLAN, moins death que GOJIRA, moins bruitiste que DAGOBA, et surtout, moins Metal que la plupart de la scène hexagonale. C’est vrai, ils aiment diluer leurs guitares dans des arrangements electro, il est évident que le timbre de voix de Christi est atypique, il n’empêche que tous leurs forfaits méritent l’attention, et ce dernier né, Midnight Rock Celebration ne déroge pas à la règle.
Ce nouvel album évoque bien des choses, Et si, sans paraître déplacé, on pourrait évoquer un PAIN dansant, un PARADISE LOST époque Host en plus Glam, ou même un JESUS ON EXTASY ouvert à des influences extérieures, LYCOSIA sait rester sur son propre chemin sans avoir à copier son voisin.
Ils sont capables de signer un hit hybride de New-Wave et de Metal irrésistible comme « Midnight Rock Celebration », et de le placer en ouverture par exemple. Ou de chanter un titre en Russe, « Stareie Kachtane » qui combine le meilleur des influences Est/Ouest, en transformant l’essai les doigts dans le nez. De se la jouer TYPE O plus vrai que nature avec un « Love » que n’aurait pas renié feu Peter. De sonner comme des SIMPLE MINDS débauchés avec l’excellent « When The Sun Disappears ». Et aussitôt après de combiner T-REX et papy MANSON, en étalant du Metal suintant de stupre sur toute la longueur de la table.
D’inviter l’esprit de Ian Curtis via la Ouija de Ian Astbury pour faire la fête au son de « Divine Embrace » synthétique et pourtant foncièrement Rock, et dont le refrain contagieux vous hante bien des nuits après son écoute. De repartir explorer les plaines de l’Est et d’y rester, le temps de soigner un épique « Steppes Reflection », savant mélange de folklore local et de riffs plombés.
Et même tiens, de clôturer leur album avec un titre si dansant que même un cul de jatte ne resterait pas assis.
LYCOSIA, c’est la boite de nuit de l’enfer, avec ses diablesses en vinyle qui prennent votre manteau à l’entrée, et minaudent tout en vous faisant les poches. Et le pire, c’est que vous leur filez un pourboire !
Certes, Midnight Rock Celebration est plus « conventionnel » que certaines étapes de leur discographie. Mais quand on a l’art de mixer des influences aussi disparates pour les faire siennes, et en plus, signer un album imparable, concis, et sans le moindre temps mort, il serait inconcevable de s’en priver. Les années passent, mais LYCOSIA ne renonce pas à expérimenter, à avancer, tout en signant des albums toujours captivants qui méritent toute votre adhésion, pour peu que l’ouverture ne vous effraie pas.
Mieux que ça. LYCOSIA n’a pas peur d’être différent. Parce que quand on a la classe, on peut marcher la tête haute.
