Si pour vous le Doom n’est qu’une longue suite ennuyeuse d’accords plaqués sur une guitare sous accordée, vaguement enjolivés par des arpèges sommaires et funèbres, alors il est clair que cette chronique ne s’adresse pas à vous.
Si par contre, vous avez un caractère maussade et foncièrement misanthrope, et que vous savez lire entre les lignes, vous pourrez trouver dans cette musique un exutoire à l’absence chronique de mots pour décrire la vacuité de votre existence.
Les français de SURTR (nom d’une divinité fictive adaptée du Dieu Viking SURT, qui est un gigantesque géant de feu, aux cheveux et aux sourcils enflammés) ont semble t’il relu les tables de lois du genre, et proposent avec World Of Doom un premier effort compact en diable, suffocant, basé sur un riff redondant qu’ils répètent à l’envi, avec quelques variations de tempo pour « aérer » le tout. Sorte de symphonie orchestrée pour mettre en musique tout le désespoir d’une vie sans issue, World Of Doom se décompose en six parties diablement homogènes, qui font la part belle aux rythmes lourds, et qui, à la première écoute, pourrait s’assimiler à un monolithe inamovible et unidimensionnel.
Seule une reprise de REVEREND BIZARRE vient troubler la pesanteur ambiante, mais le talent du combo est d’avoir parfaitement intégré ce vecteur extérieur à leur musique au point où on les en croit même les auteurs !
REVEREND BIZARRE est d’ailleurs l’influence majeure ici, au même degré qu’un CANDLEMASS des débuts, ou d’un VIRUS débarrassé de tous ses démons intérieurs et de sa folie unique.
Ce premier album reste encourageant, malgré des défauts inhérents à beaucoup de premières réalisations. Si SURTR a su extirper la quintessence des riffs plombés et lugubres de Tony Iommi (surtout sur le morceau « Part II », qu’on croirait sorti de Basement Tapes du séminal premier LP des SAB’), ils restent dans la même tonalité sur quasiment tous les titres, et la voix un peu fluette de Jeff semble parfois un peu juste pour dynamiser l’ensemble.
Mais la progression de l’album avec sa construction en paliers est loin d’être inintéressante, et s’achève même par des riffs plus légers, aussitôt contrebalancés par une ambiance poisseuse qui ressuscite le fantôme d’un Early Death Metal très lourd et très nordique.
Alors de deux choses l’une. Ou bien SURTR décide de poursuivre sa carrière en répandant la bonne parole d’un Doom de tradition, est dans ce cas précis, World Of Doom reste une excellente carte de visite, ou bien ils tentent la recherche d’une identité propre, et devront se débarrasser de tics de composition un peu trop fidèles aux us et coutumes du genre.
Il n’en reste pas moins que ce premier effort contient bien des passages envoûtants, méritant toute votre attention, pour peu que les longues suites pesantes soulignées par un filet de voix lointain soient votre tasse de thé.
