ABSTRACT AGONY (FRA) - Collapse (2011)

Premier EP officiel d’un groupe ayant déjà commis une démo en 2006, Ocean Of Sadness, Collapse pourrait s’envisager comme un instantané d’ABSTRACT AGONY en 2011, enfin stabilisé après moult problèmes de line up.
Ces trois nouveaux musiciens ayant apporté avec leur pratique leurs propres influences, la musique du combo a bien évidemment migré vers de nouveaux horizons, et pratique aujourd’hui un Dark Metal assez épais, constellé d’interventions vocales doucereuses et de nappes de piano délicates.
Alors bien sur, les canons du genre sont respectés ainsi que le cahier des charges, et les effluves conjointes d’un Doom light et d’un Black soft s’unissent pour finalement former une fragrance que n’auraient pas reniée les fils spirituels de NEUROSIS et MY DYING BRIDE, voire même ceux de BETHLEHEM, sans pour autant s’éloigner des sentiers battus.
L’atout principal d’ABSTRACT AGONY est de bénéficier d’une production très claire mais néanmoins puissante, qui permet de discerner tous les instruments sans avoir à tendre l’oreille (la basse sur « Deviced » est d’ailleurs un régal), mais aussi de ne pas transformer leur musique en un raout sonore glauque et imbuvable. La construction des morceaux suit une ligne de cohérence tout à fait légitime, sans pour autant négliger l’apport de breaks bienvenus qui confèrent à l’écoute un sentiment de non linéarité indéniable. « The Masque Of The Red Death » reste pour moi le morceau phare de cet EP, avec son ambiance déliquescente, son climat digne d’un soir d’hiver emprunt de nostalgie, avec ses passages turbo compresseur à la rythmique contrebalancés par un chant serein et posé, souligné par un clavier discret mais indispensable. C’est à mon sens le titre d’ailleurs ou les touches d’ébène et d’ivoire sont le mieux exploitées, et qui du coup offre une dimension supplémentaire à la musique du quintette, avec en exergue ce passage central de toute beauté dominé par le piano, nous plongeant dans un décor de cirque burlesque du désespoir que l’on a à aucun moment envie de quitter.
Mais Collapse n’est pas pour autant exempt de défauts, comme le prouve le dernier et plus long morceau du EP, « Words We Should Forget », qui développe les mêmes thèmes sur plus de neuf minutes et prouve de fait que tout le monde n’est pas NEUROSIS et ne peut se permettre de faire traîner les notes sans provoquer l’ennui.
Mais ceci n’est qu’une critique mineure tant la personnalité d’ABSTRACT AGONY semble déjà affirmée à l’écoute de ces trois titres bien ficelés qui laissent présager du meilleur pour l’album que l’on souhaite à venir. Il suffira juste au groupe de s’appuyer un peu plus sur les changements inspirés de « The Masque Of The Red Death » pour ne pas provoquer une lassitude qu’ils ne méritent pas. Et surtout de concentrer leurs efforts sur une durée plus raisonnable lorsque l’inspiration pêche un peu.
