Même s’il a été propulsé sur le devant de la scène grâce à monsieur Serj Tankian (SOAD), FAIR TO MIDLAND sait très bien aujourd’hui se détacher de quelques influences que ce soit et fait maintenant cavalier seul. Fables From A Mayfly : What I Tell You Three Times Is True avait joliment planté le décor bucolique des Texans. Un Metal Progressif acidulé tel un bonbon que l’on découvrirait dans un saladier de mets sans saveurs.
L’accent y avait été mis sur les accents un tantinet Pop, le rendant tout de même digeste au plus grand nombre.
Arrows And Anchors déboule quant à lui avec une plus grosse armada de résonance métallique. Les pétages de câbles s’y multiplient que ce soit musicalement ou vocalement. C’est la bousculade direct après une entrée telle la grand-messe. Une multitude de sons nous explosent aux tympans nous déstabilisant au passage. Cette fois c’est dit on ne va plus errer dans ces paysages imaginaires si légèrement contés dans l’album précédent.
Ça c’est ce qu’on aurait pu croire mais c’était sans compter sur l’une de leur note de fabrique comme ce tintement de clochette sur piano nous donnant toujours le sentiment qu’une troupe de fée un peu « prout prout » essaye de s’incruster dans une musique qui se refuse d’être trop cash. Qu’à cela ne tienne, après tout ça plaît à certains, soit, mais Dieu que ça devient lassant parfois. J’oserais dire également qu’en dehors du fait que le timbre vocal n’est pas commun, les aigus en ont rajouté parfois à mes rictus de mécontentement.
Alors, ma foi, on aura quand même droit à de belles épreuves où tout passe aisément. Sur un titre comme « Amarillo Sleeps On My Pillow », les chœurs se développent dans davantage de hargne et ont fait fuir Clochette et ses copines, ouf ! Heureusement que le jeu des instrumentistes nous rappellent qu’on a bien affaire à du Metal. Sans ça, au démarrage de « Short-Haired Tornado », on se serait cru au beau milieu d’une nouvelle production Pixar mettant en scène des petits poissons aux prénoms débiles. A deux doigts de zapper la piste je serais malgré tout surprise par un bel élan symphonique qui aura raison de mon blocage.
« Rikki Tikki Tavi » en fera de même avec son patronyme à la Tic et Tac oscillant entre nappe d’une violence dévastatrice et douceur repentie.
Voilà donc de quoi est réellement capable FAIR TO MIDLAND, surprendre voire choquer en alternant deux mondes si différents. Encore faut-il que chaque auditeur ait la patience de se laisser happer par l’intégralité des séquences qui composent chacune de leurs chansons.
