Nouvelle signature de SPV Allemagne, A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH - nom hermétique se référant au livre des Révélations, chapitre 6, verset 8, et chanté par Johnny Cash - cache au sein de son line-up des noms eux fort connus. On y retrouve en effet Sal ABRUSCATO, ex batteur de TYPE O NEGATIVE, Johnny KELLY, qui officiait au même poste, dans le même groupe, et Bobby HAMBEL, l’ex guitariste sauteur de BIOHAZARD. D’autres collaborations sont aussi notables, comme l’intervention sur quatre titres de Keith CAPUTO, chanteur de LIFE OF AGONY qui officie aux choeurs, ou de Ulrich KRIEGER, saxophoniste de Lou REED.
Est-ce pour autant que And Hell Will Follow Me s’avère l’achat indispensable du mois de juin 2011 ? Il convient de traiter la question sous plusieurs angles.
Cet album est tout d’abord logique. Au vu du pedigree des musiciens qui composent le combo, l’optique choisie est cohérente, sombre, déprimante, et lente, très lente. Bien évidemment, la musique reste dans l’optique d’un TYPE O de bon niveau, avec une très forte emprunte d’ALICE IN CHAINS, dans ses moments les plus caverneux. Et la voix de Sal, qui est passé des fûts à la guitare et au chant, est tout à fait adaptée à ce genre de sonorités. On peut y voir la symbiose entre deux albums tels que World Coming Down de TYPE O bien sur, et de Grind, d’ALICE IN CHAINS.
Comme une procession funèbre qui avancerait plus lentement que la moyenne, And Hell Will Follow Me étire son propos de bout en bout, et de fait créé une atmosphère pesante et sombre. L’enchaînement des morceaux se fait sans interruption, et si l’on excepte les interludes « Bad Dream », très technoïde, et le catchy et rapide « Bath In My Blood (Schizophrenia I) », l’homogénéité est de mise.
Avec en sus des instrumentistes rodés à l’exercice périlleux d’un style extrême et volontaire, il est évident que le produit final est de qualité. Il est hors de question de leur reprocher quoi que ce soit concernant la musicalité de leur œuvre, mais force est d’admettre que le projet de Sal n’est pas forcément à la hauteur des canons du genre.
Mais il faut bien avouer qu’And Hell Will Follow Me manque cruellement de l’ironie morbide et du nihilisme vocal de Peter Steele, ou de la classe guitaristique nonchalante de Jerry Cantrell. Si Abruscato reste un guitariste capable, l’étincelle de génie qui arrive à faire décoller n’importe quel riff plombé jusqu’à la corde n’est pas là, et du coup, on misera plus sur l’honnêteté du produit que sur son aspect novateur. Ses lignes de chant très monocordes, si elles se superposent à merveille avec le tissu harmonique de l’ensemble, restent assez linéaires, et peinent à remporter l’adhésion. Sal, en tant que compositeur, aurait gagné à diluer sa poix dans un mélange plus liquoreux, pour au final nous proposer un disque moins compact certes, mais plus diversifié, renforçant de fait son impact. Car l’accumulation de sensations sourdes ne donne pas forcément le résultat escompté, et la lassitude pointe plus d’une fois le bout de son nez.
Il n’en reste pas moins que ce premier effort reste encourageant, en espérant que A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH s’ouvre à des influences extérieures et aère sa musique avec des climats un peu moins systématiques.
Sinon, pas sur que leur soit accordé le droit d’exterminer un quart de l’humanité par la force de leur épée.
