SUBLIRITUM (no) - A Touch Of Death (2011)

Avec douze ans d’existence au compteur et seulement deux albums longue durée dans leur discographie, on ne peut pas dire que les Norvégiens de SUBLIRITUM soient des gens très productifs… Mais avec leur lot de problèmes de line-up, ils ont des circonstances atténuantes, et c’est avec ce A Touch Of Death qu’ils comptent se refaire une santé au premier plan des scènes européennes.
Avec un tel temps d’attente entre deux albums, nous étions en doit d’attendre un peu d’inédit de la part du quartette, mais foin des velléités d’innovation, SUBLIRITUM nous propose un mélange hargneux de Black/Death mélodique, dans la plus grande tradition de KEEP OF KALESSIN, ce qui n’a rien d’étonnant puisque deux des membres du groupe (Vyl et Thebon) officie dans ce plus trop side project.
Et puisqu’il faut juger cette pièce musicale comme étant l’œuvre d’un vrai groupe, je dois dire que je reste circonspect.
Si les musiciens sont plus que compétents – avec une palme particulière à Vyl qui chevauche ses fûts comme peut le faire un certain Hellhammer - il convient de préciser que la musique pratiquée l’est de manière un peu clinique. Certes les breaks sont légion, les titres sont le plus souvent constitués de plusieurs parties bien distinctes, mais je ne peux m’empêcher de trouver l’écoute de ce A Touch Of Death un poil monotone.
Avec une grosse louche de KEEP OF KALESSIN, un soupçon de MORBID ANGEL, et une pincée d’ARSIS, pourquoi pas, SUBLIRITUM reste sur les sentiers bien balisés du Black mélodique tel que les groupes nordiques ont pu le définir depuis le milieu des années 90.
L’utilisation d’une voix claire n’est pas non plus très pertinente, tant celle-ci reste constamment sur la brèche de la fausseté, et finit par devenir irritante.
Mais il faut concéder au groupe un flair indéniable en ce qui concerne la rythmique, au dessus de tout soupçon, qui de part sa créativité met en valeur des riffs qui s’ils restent très solides intrinsèquement, se retrouvent sublimés par cette cavalcade incessante. Cette profusion de cassures peut parfois faire penser à l’ATROCITY d’Hallucinations et Todessehnsucht (ce qui prouve au passage à quel point les allemands étaient en avance sur leur époque), sans toutefois posséder cette patte schizophrène qui rendait ces deux albums innovateurs.
La seconde partie de l’album selon moi est bien meilleure que la première, car le groupe a eu la bonne idée de compacter ses idées au sein de morceaux plus courts, ce qui leur confère une puissance et une ingéniosité plus développée que sur les longs titres du début. Ainsi, le quasi Thrash « Berserk » nous renvoie aux meilleures heures du MAYHEM de Grand Declaration of War, mâtiné d’une Bay Area plus vraie que nature.
En somme, si SUBLIRITUM ne révolutionnera pas le petit monde très fermé du Black mélodique, il fournira à ses adeptes une bonne demi heure de musique parfaitement exécutée, ce qui saura combler les fans les plus hardcore de ce style. Et gageons qu’avec une stabilité enfin acquise, ils prendront le temps de peaufiner leurs compositions pour leur apporter ce petit grain de folie qui leur fait parfois défaut.
