Lorsqu’on sort un CD pour faire une chronique, on a toujours un à priori stupide – le même que l’on a quand on achète un CD d’ailleurs – qui consiste à juger un groupe selon sa pochette, sa maison de disque, ses textes, etc…
Soyons honnêtes, je ne connaissais pas MORPHOSYS. Vous pouvez me jeter des cailloux, mais en même temps, vu le nombre de sorties chaque année, je défie quiconque de pouvoir écrire sur un papier tous les groupes de Metal et assimilés en activité à un moment T. Personne ?
Bien.
En traînant de ça de là sur le net, j’ai donc appris que MORPHOSYS existait depuis 2002, que A Face Of Leather était déjà son troisième album, et que trois de leurs titres avaient été sélectionnés pour figurer sur divers samplers. En regardant de plus près les textes de l’album et son artwork, une évidence me sauta au nez bien sur. Allez, on pouvait miser quelques deniers sur la grande probabilité que nos petits allemands se vautrent dans le Death le plus torride.
Et c’est un fait, MORPHOSYS fait du Death.
Mais pas seulement.
Bien loin des considérations basiques d’un groupe pratiquant ce style, le quintette ne se borne pas à ruer dans les brancards comme un attroupement de bovins bien décidés à tout charcler sur leur passage, mais distille l’agression, dose la provocation, et au final, ne ressemble pas à grand-chose de connu. Et c’est une très bonne surprise.
Alors bien sur, Chris Caravello grogne comme un beau diable, et pourrait passer pour l’incarnation humaine de Will Rahmer de MORTICIAN (c'est-à-dire sans les pédales d’effets…), mais pour le reste, c’est plus compliqué… On peut évoquer l’esprit d’un CANNIBAL CORPSE début de carrière, mais comme allusion tout au plus. Les riffs que distille le groupe sont fins, réfléchis, et toujours pertinents. En témoigne le très Heavy « Buried In Your Own Blood », qui fait commerce pendant presque toute sa durée d’un gros riff redondant, en y incluant des passages mélodiques du plus bel effet, tout en restant incroyablement Heavy.
« Child Of Sodom », basé sur une structure assez speed, se permet un break central que bon nombre de combos de la NWOBHM n’auraient pas renié.
Mais bien loin d’avoir le cul entre deux chaises, MORPHOSYS synthétise la quintessence de la brutalité primale du Death Metal, en la mixant à la rigueur et l’inventivité du meilleur Heavy Metal. En résulte une hybridation assez captivante, qui garantit une écoute toujours surprenante et motivante. Et quand à l’occasion, ils prennent même quelques libertés par rapport à leur propre style, il s’en dégage comme un parfum assez frais, et très Cradlelien « Verzweiflung » est là pour le prouver.
Sans oublier parfois des arrangements très bien sentis, tel le bruit de tronçonneuse sur le très direct « Dancing With My Chainsaw », et un caméo de luxe, featuring Paul « Master-Abomination » Speckmann sur le titre final « Necromaniac », le tout enrobé dans une production parfaite, puissante et claire, et vous obtenez une très bonne surprise.
Le groupe étant de plus assez jeune, leur marge de manœuvre reste immense, et on se prend à rêver pour le futur, une fois de nouvelles influences dégagées.
A Face Of Leather prouve qu’une fois de plus, la première impression peut être trompeuse, et que derrière des pochettes convenues et des lyrics attendus se cachent parfois des groupes au ton plus diffus.
Une bonne leçon de persévérance.
