ACRASSICAUDA (iq) - Only The Dead See The End Of The War (2010)

Pour une fois, un label propose une présentation de groupe qui ne tient ni de l’emphase ridicule, ni de la divagation. Car en effet, si vous listez tous les groupes de Metal parlant de mort, de guerre et d’atrocités, et que vous en retirez tous ceux qui n’ont pas vécu eux-mêmes ces faits, que reste il ?
ACRASSICAUDA.
Surfant sur le buzz qu’avait déclenché le documentaire Heavy Metal In Baghdad, le quartette s’est exilé aux USA, et en a profité pour enregistrer cet EP sous la houlette de M. Alex Skolnick, ex TESTAMENT. Alors, la question demeure sur toutes les lèvres. Les Iraquiens méritent ils toute l’attention qui s’est focalisée sur eux ?
Oui et non.
Nombre de reviews sur le net encensent cette sortie, mais je ne suis pas sur que l’histoire même du groupe soit étrangère à cet état de fait. Gageons que si le combo avait été américain ou suédois, l’enthousiasme eut été plus modéré. Et il faut admettre que ce brouhaha dessert plus ACRASSICAUDA qu’autre chose, et qu’ils risquent de se voir cataloguer comme « curiosité exotique » avant même d’avoir eu la chance de prouver leur talent.
Parce qu’ils en ont.
En dehors de la totale légitimité des paroles, Only The Dead See The End Of The War fleure bon le Thrash mélodique des 80’s, mâtiné d’une petite couche de Power des années 90. On retrouve un peu la même naïveté qui animait les groupes comme SHAH et KRUIZ il y a 20 ans, lorsque le Metal russe s’était ouvert au reste du monde. Sauf qu’ici, il n’y a rien de passéiste, car ACRASSICAUDA a eu le temps de digérer ses influences pour les restituer d’une manière tout à fait personnelle.
On a parlé de METALLICA ou de SLAYER, mais je citerais plus volontiers le ANNIHILATOR de Jeff Waters, pour cette précision rythmique extraordinaire, et ces guitares tranchantes qui savent autant écraser les tympans que les caresser. C’est carré, net, sans bavure, et exécuté (désolé pour le choix du verbe…) avec détermination, le tout dynamisé par une voix sombre et rauque. Pas grand-chose à jeter sur ces quatre titres, tous ont une identité propre et méritent leur place sur le CD.
Alors non, cet EP n’est pas une épiphanie musicale, mais je ne peux m’empêcher de trouver ces boucles de guitare arabisantes très séduisantes, surtout lorsqu’elles tombent à point nommé pour aérer un couplet Thrash touffu. On pourrait rapprocher la démarche de ACRASSICAUDA de celle des SYSTEM OF A DOWN, car ils partagent tous les deux une certaine aisance à diluer leurs influences ethniques dans un creuset occidental agressif.
Là où mon avis rejoint celui de bon nombre de mes confrères, c’est pour accorder à « Garden Of Stones » la palme du titre le plus réussi du lot, avec son pont lyrique et ses guitares sinueuses, délicatement posés sur une trame épaisse et convaincante.
Only The Dead See The End Of The War, et si l’on fait abstraction de tout le décorum qui entoure le groupe, est une très bonne carte de visite d’un jeune groupe qui gagne à être connu. Peu importe d’où ils viennent, peu importe ce qu’ils ont vécu, ne nous laissons porter que par la musique, qui parle pour elle-même.
