Avant d’aller plus loin dans l’analyse de cet album, je tiens à préciser que ni moi, en tant qu’auteur, ni le site Metal-Impact et ses chroniqueurs ne cautionnons, ni soutenons les convictions politiques, et les discours xénophobes de Varg Vikernes. Les paroles de cet album ne reflétant en aucun cas ces dites opinions, et restant donc dans le domaine de l’art, Fallen à sa place dans ces colonnes comme n’importe quel autre album. Inutile donc de nous bassiner les oreilles avec une quelconque irresponsabilité éditoriale, ni de déverser votre bile dans des commentaires aussi lapidaires que dispensables.
Cette mise au point étant effectuée, parlons donc de la dernière livraison de BURZUM, un an après l’acclamé Belus, qui eut tôt fait de conquérir un nouveau following au musicien norvégien.
Il est maintenant reconnu que depuis sa libération, Varg s’est réorienté vers une musique plus métallique, revenant quasiment vers ses premières amours, le professionnalisme en plus. Fallen suit donc plus ou moins la même veine que Belus, qui déjà mixait les différentes influences de son auteur à travers sa carrière.
Et puisque Varg rechigne lui-même à parler de Black Metal, pouvons nous toutefois nous ranger à son opinion ?
Oui, car ses textes, axés sur le pouvoir de la nature, la fantaisie des légendes et des mythes, n’a plus grand-chose à voir avec le rejet de la religion Chrétienne et l’apologie du diable de bon nombre de ses ex contemporains. Oui, car sa musique est plus complexe, non dans sa structure, qui au final, se rapproche considérablement de ses premiers jets, mais dans son traitement, avec ce subtil mélange de vocaux susurrés, hurlés, ou chantés.
Le meilleur exemple en est « Vanvidd », modèle de compo à tiroirs, ou Varg alterne les digressions orales sur fond de rythme effréné soutenu par des guitares acides.
Non, car l’ambiance sombre et torturée le confine au style extrême qu’il se plait tant à réfuter. Mais bien loin de la haine juvénile d’un Aske ou d’un Burzum, tout ici est contrôlé, réfléchi, et posé de la première à la dernière note.
La diversité des guitares est aussi notable, au sein d’un même morceau ou sur l’ensemble de l’album, ce qui, combiné à une cohésion indéniable, marque l’auditeur d’une impression constante de renouvellement dans la continuité.
On peut en tirant un peu sur le fil de la comparaison, rapprocher « Budstikken » et ses dix minutes, de certains travaux commis par BATHORY pendant sa période Viking, en ce sens que les deux musiciens profitent d’un long canevas simple et de motifs répétitifs pour moduler leur chant, et y insuffler divers sentiments, du calme apaisant, à la tempête dévastatrice. « Jeg Faller » en est un autre exemple notable, avec ses couplets infernaux se diluant dans un refrain chanté de manière quasi Folk. Avec en sus une partie centrale toute en nuance opposant des guitares acres et des vocalises feutrées, il constitue en quelque sorte l’apogée de cette comparaison.
Ce qui est certain, c’est que Varg est sur un chemin bien tracé depuis la sortie de Belus, et que Fallen ne fait que confirmer ses certitudes. Cet album, conçu comme une entité avec intro et épilogue, doit s’appréhender en tant que tel, et s’écouter in extenso pour pouvoir s’imprégner de l’ambiance très particulière qui s’en dégage. En résulte un charme envoûtant, sorte de Néo Black Metal aux tendances ambiantes, le plus souvent acide et violent, mais offrant des accalmies bienvenues et inspirées.
Avec Fallen, BURZUM s’offre une troisième partie de carrière placée sous les meilleurs augures.
