Je m’en souviens comme si c’était hier. Confortablement vautré dans un lit Ikea fraichement installé avec pour seule compagnie le chat de maison, j’écrivais il y’a deux ans, pour trahir l’ennui et la désolation qu’inspire la campagne turinoise, une de mes chroniques les plus abouties. Et pour cause, en ce jour d’avril 2009, To Lay Like Old Ashes d’AUSTERE m’avait profondément inspiré. Quelques 700 jours se seront écoulés et les retrouvailles avec le duo de Black Metal australien n’en sont que plus intenses. Car effectivement, rares sont les groupes de Black Metal a m’avoir transcendé de l’intérieur. Et si AUSTERE n’est pas le seul avec SILENCER, il n’en est pas loin. Question distance par contre, il est à mille lieues des noms ronflants qui ont fait la réputation du Black : MARDUK, EMPEROR, IMMORTAL, j’en oublie et pas des moindres. Cette deuxième confrontation sera quelque peu différente, car seuls deux titres seront à analyser. Ce qui pourrait apparaître comme un don du ciel pour un chroniqueur qui se voit quasiment mâcher le travail s’avère finalement être une torture quand on doit faire face au silence qui rompt brutalement l’émotion de cette petite demi-heure.
« Towards The Great Unknown » et « Only The Wind Remembers » sont les deux titres présents sur le split avec les anglais de LYRINX paru en 2008 et sélectionnés pour être pressés indépendamment d’une quelconque collaboration afin probablement de garnir une discographie désespérément vide. Une démarche dont je ne saisis pas très bien le sens mais sur laquelle je ne crache pas. Tout commence avec « Towards The Great Unknown ». Là, des souvenirs saisissants sont remontés à la surface. Il y’avait ce son de guitare assez prenant dont je me souvenais à peine. Il y’avais ces voix, ces atmosphères. La chanson démarre paisiblement, sur des notes très Indie Rock avant que Mitch ne vienne briser la glace de ses hurlements damnés. Même si ces deux là viennent d’Australie, on remarque bien que le Black n’est pas qu’une question de géo-localisation, car ils possèdent indiscutablement cette fibre qui vous prend aux tripes. Cette musique, aussi torturée soit-elle, est sincère. Elle se ressent et se dissocie de toutes les autres. A côté, tout parait surfait. Hallucination auditive ? Peut-être. Il n’empêche que des musiciens qui maitrisent aussi parfaitement leur art ne peuvent pas être corrompus, à l’heure où l’on nous répète que le Black est un genre musical qui ne saurait mentir. Les guitares s’engouffrent dans de longues épopées, toujours en conservant cet aspect mélodique très agréable. Pas de surprises, pas de pirouettes. N’est pas NACHTMYSTIUM qui veut et ce n’est en aucun cas leur objectif. Mélancolique en diable, Only The Wind Remembers est une longue traversée épique qui se conclut par un sentiment d’échec. On aurait tant aimé que notre protagoniste fictif ne se pende pas au bout de vingt-cinq minutes et au premier arbre rencontré. Mais comment réagir autrement devant tant de noirceur ? Seul regret, le chant clair qui faisait la force de certains morceaux de To Lay Like Old Ashes (plus précisément sur « Just For A Moment… ») est totalement absent ici, et ça c’est une vraie déception. Autrement, je pense qu’il n’y a rien à ajouter, si ce n’est qu’on découvre sur ce mini-CD deux titres inconnus de leur répertoire et tout à fait dignes de leur registre et de leurs immenses capacités.
Ce plongeon dans le passé m’aura fait le plus grand bien, même si ça peut paraître comme paradoxal. C’est un peu comme de revoir votre amour d’enfance, celui ou celle qui aura été votre première fois. Avant AUSTERE, j’avais une vision très archaïque sur la notion de prise de plaisir en écoutant du Black Metal. Et si les orgasmes auditifs se font de plus en plus rares actuellement, ce n’est pas sans un malin plaisir que j’ai savouré ces quelques minutes de masturbation musicale. Car AUSTERE est un de ces rares groupes à pouvoir m’en offrir.
