S’il est un fait établi que THE POODLES sont de véritables stars à domicile (participation à l’Eurovision, albums et singles dans les charts nationaux, composition et interprétation de la chanson de la délégation suédoise aux jeux Olympiques de Beijing en 2008, j’en passe et des meilleures…), il n’en va pas de même chez nous, dans une grande tradition gauloise de rester hermétique à tout produit un peu trop populaire à l’étranger. Mais il en va de même sur notre beau site, où mes confrères se sont parfois lourdement lâchés sur les albums précédents des suédois, alors, ne partageant pas forcément leur opinion que je respecte néanmoins, j’ai choisi de me pencher sur la dernière livraison du groupe, le curieusement nommé Performocracy.
Performant, cet album l’est. Dotés d’un niveau technique plus qu’honorable, les musiciens défendent des compositions, qui, si elles n’ont rien d’original, se révèlent accrocheuses, et effectivement taillées pour les classements. D’inspiration très américaine, avec une nette propension aussi à aller piocher dans le répertoire local d’EUROPE (la voix de Jakob est d’ailleurs assez similaire à celle de Joey dans les médium veloutés), Performocracy synthétise le Heavy le plus dru ( l’excellent « I Believe In You » avec son riff tonitruant et sa pesanteur rythmique, certainement le plus addictif du lot), et l’harmonie à tendance radiophonique (les exemples sont légion, de l’ouverture « I Want It All », véritable hit, à la clôture « Don’t Tell Me », au refrain contagieux, en gros, quasiment tout l’album…), et réussit à accoucher de chansons vraiment mémorisables.
Malgré un son assez aseptisé qui a tendance à fondre le tout en un monolithe dont il est difficile d’extraire un morceau en particulier, la machine tourne à plein régime, et il n’est pas rare de revenir vers tel ou tel titre en fonction des goûts personnels.
Alors oui, la ballade de rigueur « As Time Is Passing » tombe un peu trop dans le pathos aux violons, et sent bon les power-ballads des années 80, mais que voulez vous, chacun son époque et sa nostalgie, et admettons quand même que bien qu’un peu fleurie, elle aère quand même l’ensemble. Mais la réelle force de ce CD, est d’envoûter inconsciemment l’auditeur, au point de ne lui laisser porter à sa mémoire que ses points forts, occultant de fait ses petits défauts et autres erreurs passagères. En sus de titres vraiment forts, tels « Vampire’s Call » et son up tempo portant un refrain magique à bout de bras, ou « Until Our Kingdom Falls » qui rappelle le meilleur de Jorn LANDE, un soin particulier est apporté aux arrangements (« Into The Quiet Night » en est le parfait exemple), et aux intros, qui possèdent toutes ce je-ne-sais-quoi qui donne envie de se plonger au plus profond des chansons qu’elles précèdent.
Sans porter au pinacle un album qui n’en mérite pas tant, j’affirme que Performocracy mérite toute votre attention, de part sa réelle volonté de proposer une musique de qualité, sans tomber dans la niaiserie ou le trop facilement assimilable. Avec en figure de proue un chanteur à l’organe puissant et racé, un guitariste qui n’en fait pas trop mais n’oublie pas de montrer ce dont il est capable, et une section rythmique qui cimente le tout sobrement, mais puissamment, THE POODLES a bien des atouts dans la manche, et n’usurpe pas son statut de gloire nordique.
