Abyss Masterpiece, chef-d’œuvre d’abîme, voilà un patronyme qui sied à ravir au nouvel opus de HEAVENWOOD, formation portugaise de Metal Gothic et symphonique ayant vu le jour en 1992 d’abord sous le nom de DISGORGED pour en changer en 1996. C’est sous le regard sombre et creux d’un masque au mutisme arachnéen que les lusitaniens vont tisser leur toile d’une qualité tangible. Quatrième album du combo, Abyss Masterpiece se pare de bien des effets et ô combien époustouflants.
Dès lors qu’on entame « Winter Slave » on assiste à une vague symphonique abritée d’un chant possédé pour le moins discret tout de même, ne noyant en aucun cas les élucubrations de nos instrumentistes.
Comme si nous avions ouvert délicatement les pages d’un vieux grimoire éprouvé du temps qui passe ou poussé la porte d’un rêve chevaleresque « Morning Glory Clouds » s’amorce sur des voix elfiques puis entonne une musicalité soutenue et fiévreuse.
« Goddess Prisiding Over Solitude » surprendra par ses embruns Death ce qui n’est pas sans varier les plaisirs tout au long de cette écoute.
A chaque nouvelle épreuve on sent ce courant d’air glacial, ce souffle fantomatique qui fait du Gothic un style emprunt d’une froideur crépusculaire, mais divine.
C’est ainsi que « Leonor » et « Poem For Matilde » déverseront leurs flots de tourments à l’aide d’un jeu lancinant appuyé de subtiles solos. Leurs confrères de PARADISE LOST auraient pu être associé à la seconde tant le chant de Pedro Mendes (chant-guitare) est comparable aux vocalises de Nick Holmes.
Il y a de la rigueur dans toutes les notes, une application sensiblement rigoureuse malgré quelques titres plus rébarbatifs tels que « September Blood » et « Sudden Scars ».
Ils seront vite oubliés grâce à la subtile finesse de « Like Yesterday » parsemant quelques notes aux pianos et enveloppant une gratte vibrante de chœurs rassurants. Et c’est sur cette touche d’une infinie candeur « Her Lament » que nous refermerons le livre ancestral qui laissera s’échapper un voile de poussière recelant de bien des mystères, secrets et sortilèges de ces grands magiciens.
Sur cette fin séraphique qui me parcourt encore comme un frisson, j’aurais tendance à ne plus trouver les mots, mais l’effet qu’il a produit chez moi ne peut se taire plus longtemps.
Ce manuscrit est d’ors et déjà pour moi une pièce rare des bibliothèques médiévales.
Nous serons, pauvres fous, traversés d’un trouble capiteux nous faisant oublier qu’ici bas nos églises et nos châteaux ne sont que des vestiges du passé.
