En tant qu’un des groupes les plus influents de la NWOBHM (demandez un peu aux gus de METALLICA ce qu’ils en pensent…), TANK à traversé les 80’s de la même manière qu’un DIAMOND HEAD ou qu’un ANVIL, avec beaucoup de peine.
Pourtant, les albums phares ne manquaient pas à leur carte de visite, en témoignent de véritables pierres angulaires du bon Heavy puissant, tels Filth Hounds Of Hate, ou le plus précieux This Means War, avec déjà Mick Tucker à la seconde guitare. Mais une incapacité chronique à se renouveler ou au contraire, une direction un peu plus soft difficile à faire avaler aux fans ont condamné tous ces groupes pourtant aussi prometteurs qu’IRON MAIDEN ou DEF LEPPARD.
Après un ultime effort dans cette même décade (le très moyen et éponyme Tank), et un petit coucou post bug de l’an 2000 (Still At War, en 2002, sympathique, mais pas indispensable), le quintette nous revient rasé de frais, avec un brûlot qui certes, cherche son temps, mais atteint plus d’une fois la cible.
L’apport de Doogie White au chant n’est certes pas étranger à la réussite de cet essai. Avec sa voix chaude et puissante, il parvient sans difficulté à mettre en relief des compositions simples et honnêtes, mais tout sauf simplistes.
Alors certes, le riff d’intro à la tierce de « Judgement Day », le morceau d’ouverture sonne incroyablement daté, mais la suite de la compo, puissante et racée replace les débats au centre. Un refrain à l’unisson, et une rythmique béton suffisent à lever le pavillon, et c’est parti pour presque une heure de délectation. Le très Jornien « Feast Of The Devil » permet une fois de plus à Doogie de se mettre en avant (sa voix à même des accents très Biff Byford, l’harmonie en plus), tandis que « Phoenix Rising » nous ramène aux temps ou le combo était comparé à MOTÖRHEAD. L’épique et lourd « War Machine » reste un modèle du genre, avec ses guitares épaisses et ses chœurs guerriers contrastant avec des arpèges délicats, un peu à la manière d’un BLIND GUARDIAN en grande forme. « Great Expectations » épice les débats en se ressourçant aux racines du groupe, tandis que la ballade très WHITESNAKE « After All » nous offre le quart d’heure américain sur un plateau. « The Last Laugh » se veut rapide et concise, et si son refrain tombe dans les poncifs, la mélodie post couplets vaut le détour. Le chant profond de Doogie appuie encore plus le Heavy de « World Without Pity », au titre bien senti, pour six minutes lourdes comme une chape de plomb. « My Insanity » clôt les débats de fort belle manière, alliant une fois de plus la force de frappe aux harmonies vocales maîtrisées.
Au rayon des griefs, on pourrait reprocher à TANK de laisser s’étirer certains morceaux au-delà du raisonnable en raison du peu d’idées qui les animent. De parfois voler en pilote automatique, laissant un riff classique abattre le boulot sans chercher à fouiller plus loin.
Mais la qualité instrumentale est telle qu’on ne peut se résoudre à ranger War Machine au rayon des albums passéistes sans réel intérêt. TANK joue juste, ne cherche pas à révolutionner quoi que ce soit, et si les nostalgiques de la glorieuse doublette 81/82 trouveront toujours à redire sur l’absence d’Algy WARD ou des frangins BRABBS, les autres n’en auront cure et se satisferont d’un CD de très bonne facture, qu’on peut glisser dans la platine certains soirs ou les inédits font défauts.
