En vadrouille avec un collègue et néanmoins ami, direction notre revendeur préféré, nous étions d’humeur taquine et fouineuse. Opération fouille intense du bac nouveautés pour dénicher peut être une nouvelle perle rare en provenance d’Allemagne ou des USA. Bon, premier coup d’œil, rien de transcendant. Petit interrogatoire de notre vendeur habituel toujours prompt à caser ses invendables, mais là encore, sa réponse ne fut pas des plus inspirantes.
« Hum, non pas grand-chose, si y’a ce truc là, ça devrait vous plaire, ça fait du bruit… »
Mais qu’attendait t’il donc pour le glisser sur la platine ? Devant nos mines contrites, l’employé s’exécuta donc, et les sillons commencèrent à dérouler et à répandre leur élixir dans toute la pièce.
« Hum…Ca mule non ? »
« Ouais, mais la voix est zarb, c’est quand même super aigu…. »
« Dites monsieur, vous êtes sur que ça tourne à la bonne vitesse ? »

« Heu…Non sir, c’est un Mini LP, donc 33 tours 1/3 par minute…. »

Alors à la vitesse d’usage, la pilule passait d’autant mieux. Un peu défaits au départ de voir la cadence générale considérablement se ralentir, nous finissions par tomber d’accord pour dire que ce skeud était clairement dispensable. Mais nous étions jeunes, et fans de toms qui détonnent et de hurlantes vocales qui étonnent. Alors, mon collègue et néanmoins ami de ranger la galette au rayon « Sympa, mais pas top » de sa collection.
Et puis le temps passe, on vieillit, et on oublie.
Mais le temps, en plus d’être assassin, est décidemment très coquin, et on se souvient. On parcourt le net à la recherche de sa mémoire et on retrouve vite ce fameux mini-LP qui agitait les neurones comme d’autres les pruniers. Et on réécoute. Bon sang, mais c’est bien sur…
5 titres (un en bonus sur la réédition, mais à éviter comme la peste), c’est court pour se faire une opinion. Surtout que les HEXX en question n’étaient pas à l’époque des cadors de la créativité, comme en témoignent leurs deux premiers opus fleurant bon le Speed Metal peu inspiré et volatile. Mais là, c’est net, sans bavure…
La voix infernale et démonique de Clint BOWER vous prend aux tripes dès les premières secondes, et l’on se dit alors qu’on a rarement connu vocaliste aussi investi. Les soli se multiplient à l’infini, tombant toujours pile.
Mais ce qui choque au-delà de tout, c’est la similitude flagrante de toutes les compositions. Bâties sur le même rythme, à la double croche près, elles instaurent un climat dérangeant, créant une atmosphère très linéaire et oppressante, comme si le groupe avait délibérément choisi de ne pas varier le tempo ni l’inspiration pour mieux faire passer son message de brutalité.
Et on tombe dans le piège rapidement envoûté par ce climat délétère, et les titres s’enchaînent dans une cadence hypnotique avant de nous laisser choir comme par miracle au bout de 20 petites minutes. On se retrouve hébété, comme mis en face d’une réalité crue dont on n’appréhende pas encore tous les tenants et aboutissants.
Oui, même en 1988, le Thrash pouvait encore être dangereux.
Pas de titre à mettre en avant, ce petit monolithe s’ingurgite d’une traite, avant d’y retourner la bave aux lèvres.

Il est parfois bon de laisser le temps faire son œuvre, nous permettant de mûrir et de prendre du recul. Ce qui parait anodin à 16 ans ne l’est plus forcément à 40.
