L’annonce d’un nouvel album d’HELMET à de quoi raviver bien des passions. Quatre ans d’attente depuis le plutôt bon Monochrome, c’est long, alors ce Seeing Eye Dog tient il toutes ses promesses ?
Les fans de Page Hamilton le savent, il n’a plus 18 ans. Alors au moment de glisser cet album dans leur Ipod, ils savent pertinemment qu’il est inutile d’attendre le chaos célébré à grands coups de beuglantes post adolescentes. L’homme a mûri, il est posé, et sur de son fait.
De ceci en découle cela. Un album calme, qui exige quelques écoutes avant de s’incruster dans la mémoire. Le musicien est parfois comme le bon vin, il s’améliore avec l’âge. Page lui, change. Il préfère les atmosphères qui se développent sur quelques minutes plutôt qu’un riff plombé qui se répète ad nauseam.
Alors oui dressons derechef le constat. Seeing Eye Dog est bien sur plus proche de Monochrome ou Size Matters que d’Aftertaste ou Meantime.
Mais à quoi servirait de proposer la même recette année après année ? Page est là pour se faire plaisir, et ça se sent.
Le ton général de l’album est souvent proche de ce que pouvait parfois proposer les SMASHING PUMPKINS. Et d’ailleurs la voix de Page emprunte plus d’une fois les tonalités de Billy CORGAN. C’est plus alternatif que Post Hardcore, et on serait tenté de dire « tant mieux » !
« So Long », le titre d’ouverture à un swing contagieux. Un peu comme si « Bullet With Butterfly Wings » rencontrait « I Love Your Money » de DAISY CHAINSAW. Mais « Seeing Eye Dog » reste sans doute le meilleur lien avec le passé. Lourd, très lourd, avec de bons arrangements, c’est un clin d’œil agréable à un début de carrière.
« Welcome To Algiers » est plutôt soft, un peu Emo dans l’esprit. Mais attention, celui de SUGAR, pas de BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE !
Le chant décalé de « L.A Water » est plus que séduisant. La mélodie est doucereuse, et on se laisse emporter par ces chœurs célestes.
Même constat pour « In Person », qui sonne un peu comme les BEATLES de 66, avec la distorsion en plus. Etrange ? Pas vraiment, car on trouve un peu plus loin une formidable reprise de « And Your Bird Can Sing » des fab four, reprise à la lettre, avec un tempo divisé par deux. On aurait pu croire ça grotesque, mais dans l’entité que représente Seeing Eye Dog, c’est tout sauf incongru. Ces mêmes arpèges cristallins, ce même chant faussement goguenard, c’est terriblement efficace et diablement bien vu.
« Miserable » reste dans la ligne éditoriale, commence très dur pour s’étaler sur un couplet ou la violence latente gronde, avant de la laisser éclater sur le refrain. Du HELMET 2010 pur jus !
Le dernier titre, « She’s Lost » confirme la tendance, et dépasse allégrement les six minutes, ce qui nous laisse largement le temps de nous replonger dans le bain, avec un désir certain de repasser le disque encore une fois.
Si certains combos se plaisent à ressasser la même recette en se donnant l’illusion à presque cinquante ans qu’ils en ont toujours vingt, Page HAMILTON est rassurant de lucidité. Bien conscient que proposer des versions relookées de « Biscuits For Smut » ou « In The Meantime » ne le mènerait nulle part, il préfère suivre sa route, quitte à s’aliéner une partie de ses fans les plus intolérants.
Et du coup, il ne fait que renforcer son image de musicien profondément humain, très loin des considérations égocentriques du business.
Et pour avoir vu plusieurs fois HELMET live, je ne peux que confirmer cette impression.
Honnête, oui c’est le mot. Comme Page, Seeing Eye Dog est un album honnête.
