Deux ans après l’énorme transition que fut Harmony Corruption, NAPALM DEATH revient sur le devant de la scène avec un nouvel album, et un nouveau line up. Changement numériquement minime, puisqu’un seul membre quitte le navire, mais pas des moindres, puisque cette fois ci, c’est Mick HARRIS qui prend la porte. Ca y est, le dernier membre du « Canal Historique » de ND, le gardien de la flamme à lui aussi quitté le navire, persuadé d’être allé au bout de son histoire.
L’avenir lui donnera artistiquement raison, car avec des groupes et projets aussi différents que l’industriel/ambient SCORN et le Grindy Jazz PAINKILLER (avec un autre flingué notoire, John ZORN), il gagnera une estime critique et professionnelle qui lui étaient refusées du temps de ses blast beats chez ND.
Le petit nouveau, au CV aussi peu fourni que son jeu est impressionnant s’appelle Danny HERRERA, et il sera à ce jour, le dernier arrivé au sein du gang. Et si l’on met de côté une légère incartade de Barney chez EXTREME NOISE TERROR, la composition du combo ne changera plus.
Mais qu’en est-il de son style musical ?
Tout comme Harmony Corruption était l’album de la rupture, Utopia Banished est celui de la recherche. Tout en admettant les innovations de son prédécesseur, Utopia cherche aussi à renouer d’une certaine façon avec les racines Punk du groupe, et le caractère instantané de ses deux premiers albums.
Il en résulte un album très déroutant au prime abord, avec ses structures alambiquées (les riffs se multiplient, et ont tendance à partir souvent dans les aigus), ses parties ultra rapides se noyant dans des breaks ininterrompus, et son chant plutôt linéaire.
Le son n’arrange rien à l’affaire, très sourd, avec des guitares très en retrait, et un chant trop en avant. Seule la batterie pour une fois s’en tire bien, Danny n’étant certainement pas étranger à l’affaire. A de rares exceptions près, aucun titre n’accroche l’oreille, si ce n’est « I Abstain » et son intro nitro, « Judicial Slime » et son groove contagieux, et bien sur « Contemptuous », atypique à l’époque mais diablement révélateur des tendances Indus que ND allait emprunter dans un futur proche. Assez influencé par MEATHOOK SEED, le projet solo de Mitch, ce morceau d’ambiance est une des meilleures clôtures que le groupe ait offert sur un de ses albums.
Quant au reste, il m’a toujours laissé sceptique. On sent que ND se cherche, essaie de s’offrir de multiples options, mais il reste un goût d’inachevé, comme un savant brouillon que l’on aurait jamais pris le temps de recopier, des notes laissées sur un bureau en attendant d’être rédigées au propre.
Utopia Banished à longtemps divisé les fans, certains le trouvant meilleur que le précédent, d’autres assez creux, et j’avoue que c’est celui que j’écoute le moins dans toute la discographie du groupe.
Mais il reste un témoignage primordial, ne serait ce que parce qu’il fut le premier avec le line up définitif. Il fut aussi un très bon indicateur de la suite des évènements, et le glissement progressif du groupe vers un Death/Indus qui atteindra des sommets, mais qui produira aussi des albums assez insipides.
Il sortit en version Cd normale, puis en réédition boîtier cristal et digipack en 1996, avec les six titres suivants en bonus : « One and the Same », « Sick and Tired », « Malignant Trait », « Killing with Kindness », « A Means to an End » et « Insanity Excursion ».
