Le concept même de « supergroupe » m’a toujours profondément ennuyé. Qu’il s’agisse de BAD ENGLISH, M.A.R.S., CONTRABAND, The FIRM et autres, il s’agit la plupart du temps d’une espèce de promo bon marché pour artistes en manque de premier plan, une porte de sortie facile, un alibi peu convaincant.
Encore faut il à la base que ses membres soient de vraies et authentiques stars.
On peut parler de VELVET REVOLVER. Non que leur musique fût révolutionnaire, mais au moins, l’affiche était alléchante.
Le casting de The Expendables aussi.
Alors vous comprendrez que lorsque le principal vecteur marketing de « vente » de HELLYEAH est de tabler sur la popularité et le statut de ses membres, je m’interroge sur la pertinence du propos.
Dire que MUDVAYNE est un groupe culte, c’est un tantinet exagéré non ? Certes, ils ont eu quelques bons titres, de bons shows, mais de la à en faire des musiciens de premier ordre, il y a un énorme fossé que je ne franchirai pas.
Et quand on décortique le line-up de HELLYEAH à la loupe, on se dit que sans Vinnie PAUL, le semi anonymat n’est pas si loin (Parce que le bassiste, Bob ZILLA en plus, n’a fait partie que de DAMAGEPLAN, un groupe fondé par…Vinnie PAUL !).
Mais passons outre ces considérations. Après tout, on ne juge pas un album à sa pochette ni à ses membres. Mais là encore, niveau musical, ça n’est pas vraiment l’épiphanie.
Avec le pedigree des instrumentistes, on était en droit de s’attendre à une explosion de puissance, mâtinée de mélodies vicieuses et de rythmique insidieuses.
Manque de bol, le groupe se définit lui-même comme un « party band ».
Et là aussi, c’est raté.
Absolument rien de festif dans cet album. A la rigueur, certains titres ont un swing indéniable, quoique léger (« Cowboy Way », le titre d’ouverture et aussi un des meilleurs, « Pole Rider » et son refrain bien troussé), mais le reste de Stampede est franchement tiède.
C’est lourd la plupart du temps, très lourd parfois, comme à l’occasion de « Order The Sun », le meilleur morceau selon moi, évoquant autant KYUSS que « Albatross » de CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, ça tourne souvent autour de ce que MUDVAYNE pouvait proposer de moins core, mais ça tombe parfois dans le franchement triste (« Better Man », pitoyable, avec son intro à peine décalquée sur le « Don’t Cry » des GUNS, « enrichie » si je puis dire par un chorus de guitare qui aurait fait rire Kurt COBAIN…).
Rien n’est enthousiasmant sur ce Stampede, on peine même à reconnaître le jeu de batterie de Vinnie, qui a perdu son groove, un peu comme Igor Cavalera sur l’album Inlflikted. Après une bonne dizaine d’écoutes, j’en arrive à la même conclusion. C’est tellement banal qu’on finit par laisser l’album dérouler dans faire attention.
Et ça, c’est mauvais signe.
Alors que les grosses boites arrêtent d’essayer de nous vendre leur lessive en arguant que sa marque est fameuse et qu’elle va laver plus blanc.
Supergroupe dans le cas de HELLYEAH, c’est déjà limite, mais super musique, c’est franchement de l’escroquerie.
