Au dire de certains échos journalistiques, Night Is The New Day serait le meilleur album des nordiques de KATATONIA. En effet, après s’être bien défoulé avec leurs potes d’OPETH (Martin et Mickael) sur leur projet commun, BLOODBATH, qui soit dit en passant, ressemble à KATATONIA comme Laurel ressemble à Hardy, Anders et Jonas nous offrent enfin, leur huitième album studio, attendus de pieds fermes depuis The Great Cold Distance (2006).
Il s’avère en effet que dès la première écoute, « Forsaker », on est touché par la virtuosité mélancolique voir dépressive des compositions, signe de reconnaissance qui font l’identité du groupe. On est plongé au cœur de la froideur des mélodies, perpétuellement sublimées par l’envoûtant chant de Jonas Renkse. Tantôt bercé par des tempos lents aux riffs graves, puis secoué l’instant d’après par une énergie crépusculaire comme le prouvent les très jolis morceaux « The Longest Year » et « Liberation ».
On appréciera avec une évidence certaine la qualité du disque, fruit d’une inspiration basée sur les mêmes valeurs, et emprunt de textes toujours fondés sur l’entité humaine. L’absence de refrains qui captent ou accrochent se fera oublier avec finesse grâce à la clarté de la production, magnifiquement réalisée par David Castillo. « Inheritance » en est bien la preuve.
C’est un joli tableau contrasté de douceur « Idle Blood » et de violence « Day And Then The Shade » qui le rende oppressant. Même s’ils lui donnent un aspect linéaire, les morceaux s’enchainent à la perfection, nous donnant le sentiment d’avoir à faire à un seul et unique titre de 48 minutes contenus tel un bijou dans un écrin, sous la protection bienfaisante d’une vierge aux mains tendues comme en témoigne la pochette. Je conseillerais tout de même cet album aux amateurs du genre. A tous ceux qui aiment les ambiances intimistes, douloureuses comme « Departer », sombres, et chargées d’émotions.
Alors cet album n’est pas le meilleur, non, car ne dit-on pas que le meilleur reste à venir ?
Il est surtout la preuve d’une grande maturité du combo et d’une constante évolution dans l’écriture, sans jamais s’éloigner de leur empreinte artistique.
