Ceux qui considéraient 1349 comme une assemblée de gros bourrins entièrement vouée à la cause du malin, et incapables de faire preuve d’une quelconque finesse vont en être pour leurs frais…
Alors bien sur, beaucoup d’entre vous ne verront pas la différence qu’il peut exister entre Hellfire, Revelations of The Black Flame et Demonoir, tant l’assimilation directe et brute avec le bruit vous paraîtra évidente, mais pour les initiés, les ralliés de longue date à la cause d’un Black Metal de tradition, innovant et téméraire, le fossé semblera énorme.
D’une machine de guerre implacable, capable de coucher sur Cd un titre aussi définitif et immédiat que « I Am Abomination », 1349 est devenu une science exacte, une parabole infernale sur la condition (in)humaine.
Par ce refus de stagnation, le quatuor se pose en héritier direct des plus grandes formations du genre, tels MARDUK, EMPEROR, le MAYHEM de Grand Declaration Of War, et même, en osant remonter aux racines, d’un HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST qui n’aurait pas fini d’écrire ses commandements.
Le parallèle n’est pas si osé d’ailleurs, puisque l’on retrouve Tom G Warrior (ou quel que soit son patronyme actuel préféré…) derrière la console, et force est de constater qu’il a fort bien accompli son office.
Et le legs du Frost est plus que palpable au travers de ces 13 titres qui forment une symphonie discontinue à la gloire des ténèbres les plus impénétrables. Exit les cavalcades sauvages et débridées qui n’étaient rien de moins que la trademark du groupe, et bienvenue aux climats oppressants, déliquescents, à l’air putride chargé de souffre.
Reliés par de courts intermèdes, les 9 véritables morceaux de Demonoir ont chacun leur identité propre et remontent une source Black Metal que l’on croyait tarie depuis longtemps. A l’instar du MARDUK de Wormwood ou même du MAYHEM de De Mysteriis Dom Sathanaas, 1349 refuse la facilité, et s’insinue dans les corridors de la paranoïa la plus profonde pour en ressortir grandi. A ce titre, l’ouverture réelle de l’album, « Atomic Chapel » constitue la preuve la plus tangible de l’orientation hermétique du groupe. Incantatoire, résolument malsaine, la longue litanie de 49 minutes prend le plus souvent des allures de messe noire, et il est clair que cette recherche était préméditée. Et même si le rythme s’emballe en plus d’une occasion, la brutalité a perdu de sa franchise quasi naïve pour ne plus représenter qu’une manière parmi tant d’autres d’atteindre un but fixé. Celle de faire franchir à l’auditeur les portes d’un très vieux cimetière, le plus ancien, celui des espoirs déchus.
Et cette ultime balade se fera au son de « Devil Of The Desert » et « Demonoir », les deux oraisons les plus funèbres de l’album. Lourdes, pesantes comme le jugement dernier. Sans possibilité d’expiation.
La violence peut parfois revêtir des atours trompeurs et guider le pèlerin sur le faux chemin des certitudes.
