Il est d’usage à l’heure actuelle, quand on voit un nouveau groupe de Metal avec une chanteuse, de faire la moue et se dire « encore ! », comme cela a pu être le cas en son temps avec le Neo ou le Metalcore. Parce que le « Metal à chanteuse » a épuisé ses ressources, semble-t-il, et la patience des auditeurs et des chroniqueurs. ULTIMATE FATE, nouveau groupe qui nous vient de Gothenburg en Suède, a bien une frontwoman, mais on ne peut pas vraiment parler d’eux comme un groupe à chanteuse, dans le sens où cela à une connotation soit lyrique soit gothique. Jennie Söderberg officie dans un groupe de Heavy qui lorgne parfois vers le Thrash. Sa voix s’adapte donc à ce genre musical. Pas éraillé, elle a bien sûr une belle voix, mais une voix Rock, puissante et pure. Musicalement, ULTIMATE FATE est très Heavy. Un Heavy mélodique inspiré avec grosses guitares et claviers dont les riffs s’insinuent dans les têtes avec beaucoup de facilité. Cependant, on pourra leur reprocher de manquer de personnalité ; c’est du très classique. Efficace, bien joué, à propos, mais classique. Et cela risque de les desservir dans cet océan de groupes qui émergent. Il faut peut-être plus que ce qu’ils proposent pour marquer plus profondément les esprits. Pourtant, techniquement, les musiciens sont bons. Sans en mettre plein les oreilles avec de la technique à tout va, c’est très propre et carré. Professionnel. La production n’est pas mauvaise non plus même si on peut se poser la question du pourquoi d’un son de guitare si gras alors que tout le reste est beaucoup plus lisse. Loin d’apporter un grain différent, cela dérange plus qu’autre chose. Au niveau de la composition, malgré un grand classicisme, on peut saluer le désir du groupe d’aller droit à l’essentiel avec des morceaux courts (tous les titres de la démo sont dans le même format). Ils ne cherchent pas à poser avec des pièces interminables mais affirment qu’on peut marquer les esprits avec des pièces condensées et pourtant suffisantes.
ULTIMATE FATE a donc de bonnes cartes en mains. Cependant, je ne suis pas persuadé que cela suffira pour eux, malheureusement. J’espère me tromper…
