Quand on est en tournée, il est d’usage de faire un peu de promo. Lors de la dernière venue de SOULFLY en France, j’en avais profité pour taquiner le père Max avec mes questions. Lorsque fut venu le moment d’évoquer leur futur album, il était resté très évasif, tout en omettant pas de préciser que cet album, quelque soit sa teneur, serait très brutal, concis, court, comme un démarquage volontaire du trop fameux Reign In Blood. Bien que ne doutant pas de sa sincérité, je pris quelque précautions et mettait sa confession sur le compte de l’enthousiasme.
MARDUK étant déjà passé par cette phase « révérence indirecte envers un des albums les plus brutaux et mythiques de tous les temps » avec Panzer Division Marduk, et s’étant planté en beauté, je préférais attendre la sortie dudit album et juger sur pièce.
Mes précautions n’ont pas été vaines, car Omen est tout, sauf une digression sur l’ouvre majeure de SLAYER. En partant du postulat simple que Max est un musicien stable, on était en droit de s’attendre avec ce nouvel opus à un changement dans la continuité, et c’est exactement ce qu’il se passe. On reste dans la veine Dark Ages/Conquer, avec une petite touche à la Cavalera Conspiracy, surtout dans les licks de guitare mélodiques. Donc, en gros, tout ce qui a fait l’univers du musicien ces dernières années.
Il n’empêche qu’il faut bien juger Omen en tant qu’entité, et non en tant que prolongation d’un travail antérieur, et Michel Audiard ne m’en voudra pas de paraphraser un de ses dialogues cultes, « C’est du brutal ! », « Faut reconnaître que c’est plutôt une boisson d’hommes… ». Entre rythmiques quasiment Punk (mais Max n’a jamais caché son amour pour DISCHARGE…), et cavalcades plus que Thrash, SOULFLY oscille entre la sauvagerie débridée (« Vulture Culture », « Bloodbath & Beyond », « Great Depression »), le Heavy up tempo bien méchant (« Jeffrey Dahmer », « Off With Their Heads », « Mega Doom », au titre trompeur !), tout en passant par le bien écrasant (« Rise Of The Fallen », « Kingdom »).
Au milieu de tout ça surnage l’interlude instrumental indispensable, « Soulfly VII » très délicat et plus qu’agréable à écouter, avec son solo en son clair vaporeux, une relecture complètement dispensable de « Refuse/Resist », (de l’intérêt de s’auto citer….et de regretter encore plus le jeu tribal de frère Igor…), et surtout, une vaste tuerie, qui selon moi représente le climax de l’album, le gigantesque « Lethal Injection », durant laquelle Tommy Victor, ex commandeur en chef de l’armada PRONG vient pousser la gueulante (tout comme Greg Puciato de DEP sur « Rise Of The Fallen », en moins réussi). Trois minutes d’agression tendue, avec un final épileptique de première bourre. On appelle ça une grande claque dans sa face !
En résumé, et alors que son ancien combo SEPULTURA (ou plutôt le Andreas Kisser Band…) semble se noyer un peu plus à chaque album dans de vaines tentatives de paraître encore crédible, SOULFLY mène sa barque sans se soucier des modes, et a depuis longtemps acquis une identité propre, qu’il développe avec beaucoup d’intelligence depuis des années.
Omen est une réussite, à classer dans les meilleures sorties du groupe, avec suffisamment de puissance pour attirer les gros vilains, mais aussi la bonne dose de diversité apte à séduire les plus exigeants. Un poil en dessous de Dark Ages, à la hauteur de Conquer, une livraison de qualité, que les fans vont déguster avec le plus grand appétit.
Allez Max, encore un album comme ça, et je te pardonne définitivement le très vilain Primitive !
