Prétendre tout connaître serait une hérésie que je ne commettrai pas. Et je prends un malin plaisir à faire quelques découvertes par an et à vous les faire partager. Bien entendu dans ce partage existent quelques déchets que nous laisserons aux carnassiers, et d'autres qui vous explosent entre les oreilles sans crier gare.
Il est évident que CLAMPDOWN fait partie aujourd'hui, pour moi, des nouveautés sans antécédents connus. C'est donc avec un plaisir non feint que je me lance dans l'écoute de ce premier jet musical. Ma première impression est dubitative quand au choix du combo sur l'artwork, ce dernier est très sobre dans un écrin qui aurait pu convenir à nos grands dépressifs de MY DYING BRIDE. Et ce n'est pas le livret qui me fera changer d'avis, puisque celui-ci n'est pas dépouillé mais vide. Néant, rien, asthénique, et mon caractère de vieux bourru se dit que si le contenu est à l'image du contenant on va s'ennuyer sévère...
Plus le choix désormais, il faut se lancer dans cette écoute avec une énorme appréhension négative. Une demi-confirmation s'ouvre devant moi ; je suis devant un ersatz de GOJIRA pendant les premières secondes de « Vision Of Splendor ».
Pauvre imbécile au jugement hâtif que je suis, car j'ai beau tenté de ne pas donner suite aux élans sonores du quatuor, je suis malgré moi captivé par ce qui se passe dans mon lecteur. Ce que je pensais être une copie se révèle être une source de talent intarissable, chaque piste s'ouvre telle une porte sur un monde parallèle. Des univers aux multiples facettes d'une profondeur d'âme n'ayant d'écho que dans nos émotions les plus enfouies. Tantôt la colère, l'angoisse, la peur, l'envie, la rage, la haine s'entremêlent dans un enchevêtrement de riffs d'une richesse quasi illimitée qui n'a d'égale que la complexité de ses arrangements. Plus le jeu des guitares se fait abscons plus la batterie est aérienne et aucun tom ne vient s'émouvoir de mon incapacité à appuyer sur STOP !
La production n'est pas en reste par un côté sombre mais non compressé, une aura de brutalité dans un océan de douceur.
Mais comment alors classer cette OVNI musicale ?
Metal, oui bien sûr mais pas seulement car trop réducteur tant les relents DEATH sont présents.
Je dirais alors qu'il faut que vous imaginiez GOJIRA copulant allègrement avec OPETH. Non pas que la musique de nos compatriotes soit d'obédience suédoise, mais parce que l'ambiance dans laquelle ils nous invitent me rappelle leurs longs voyages.
Alors pour une fois je vais tenter de faire simple, je suis conquis, sans autre forme de procès, sans détour et sans état d'âme.
Et je vous le demande humblement, ne passez pas à côté de CLAMPDOWN sans vous arrêter !
