Initialement FORTID était le one-man-band d'un jeune Islandais Einar Thorberg passionné par le monde Viking qui s'est attaqué à mettre en musique un monument de la mythologie scandinave : le poème Völuspá qui relate l'histoire de la création du monde. Depuis le jeune homme a déménagé en Norvège et a recruté d'autres musiciens pour assouvir son projet. Pourtant Eldur (son pseudonyme) s’est de nouveau chargé de l’intégralité de la composition de cet album.
Trilogie débutée il y a quelques années avec le premier album Thor's Anger, celui-ci officiait dans du Black Metal aux influences épiques. L'évolution avait été notable avec The Arrival Of Fenris à la production beaucoup plus adéquate et aux morceaux plus vivaces. Le petit dernier Fall Of The Ages lorgne désormais vers des compositions lyriques et beaucoup plus mélodiques. Les airs épiques et mélodies guerrières sont plus prononcés, les nappes de claviers plus déterminées, les guitares plus pleureuses... Le genre black viking est à son paroxysme.
Ce disque sonne de manière cohérente, pourtant les titres sont variés, inspirés, souvent aux rythmiques mid-tempos et aux mélodies accrocheuses. Les chœurs sont vivants et les alternances de voix rauques et claires accompagnée de chant féminin renforcent le coté Pagan/Viking qui s'est développé au fils des années au sein de FORTID. Les guitares guerrières développent des envolées barbares sur les titres rugueux comme "Ragnarök Army From The East" ou plus apaisées comme sur les très mélancoliques "Equilibrium Reclaimed" et "The Future".
Attention ce troisième opus ne révolutionne pas le genre, les compositions sont classiques pour le genre, pas d'expérimentation ou d'extravagance, FORTRID aime le travail bien fait où diversité et rigueur ne veux pas dire prise de risque inutile.
La surprise de ce troisième opus viendrait en fait de sa simplicité dans les compositions et les mélodies. L'absence d'instruments divers et variés peut donner un coté épuré mais rends cet opus beaucoup plus facile et accessible qui ne pourrait laisser l'imaginer.
