EXODUS (usa) - Exhibit B: The Human Condition (2010)

Le 26 octobre de l’année 2007, EXODUS marquait à jamais l’histoire du Thrash Metal pour deux raisons bien précises. La première est évidente, avec The Atrocity Exhibition - Exhibit A, nos californiens livraient probablement THE album Thrash de l’année, pour ne pas dire de la décennie. Une ode dévouée et passionnée comme aucune autre. C’était sans compter sur eux-mêmes et leur sens de l’implicite. La meilleure nouvelle de la journée étant probablement le nom du CD lui-même, « Exhibit A » qui laissait présager d’une suite alphabétique réjouissante. Le 7 mai de l’année 2010, EXODUS donne un grand coup de botte dans la fourmilière et confirme les décryptages scientifiques passés avec Exhibit B : The Human Condition. Je ne vous ferais pas l’insulte de vous présenter en long et en large ce combo américain œuvrant au service du Metal et des services de rhumatologie spécialisés dans la remise en place des vertèbres cervicales depuis 1980.
Toujours très inspiré par la culture de la violence, EXODUS introduit son récital avec « The Ballad Of Leonard And Charles » (à la vue de l’artwork, je mise une pièce sur De Vinci et Darwin) qui, comme son nom ne l’indique pas, n’est pas vraiment une ballade (hormis l’entrée acoustique) mais plutôt une déferlante incroyable d’intensité. L’ami Dukes est toujours là, s’étant définitivement imposé après une arrivée controversée derrière les micros. Je cherchais d’ailleurs un nom à mettre sur la source d’inspiration de John, chanteur de WARBRINGER… je dois dire que les intonations hargneuses de Rob sur ce titre mais également tout au long de ce disque m’ont sauté au visage. Une chose est sûre, le quintet ne rechigne pas à la tâche et la création de morceaux interminables (entre 6 et 9 minutes pour la plupart) ne les effraie pas. C’est tant mieux car ils n’ont aucun problème pour assumer ce choix. Si la dominante générale va au Thrash old-school, période Fabulous Disaster voire Pleasures Of The Flesh, on se rapproche aussi par moment de la nouvelle génération de Thrasheux qui use de riffs beaucoup plus modernisés et génériques (« Downfall »). Au vu de tous les secrets qu’il a à nous livrer, Exhibit B se consomme dans les grandes largeurs, en prêtant une oreille attentive à chaque détails qui jamais, ne sont le fruit du hasard. EXODUS effectue une critique acerbe de la société (« Burn, Hollywood, Burn ») dans des compositions vicieuses et viscérales. Les guitares suivent les carcans du Thrash à la californienne, intonations poussiéreuses, créativité succincte, efficacité assurée. Droit dans la continuité d’Exhibit A, cette musique se boit jusqu’à plus-soif. Et même si son côté progressif en gênera plus d’un, il n’y a pas une seule seconde à hésiter, The Human Condition n’est qu’une grande création de plus. Fait rare, la basse y est particulièrement présente, vrombissante, prête à vous hypnotiser. La production ne souffre d’aucuns torts et seuls les pinailleurs réfractaires aux longues démonstrations de violence pure y trouveront à redire. Honnêtement, le reste du monde ne peut qu’être conquis.
Après OVERKILL et juste avant SODOM, le Thrash Metal à encore de beaux jours devant lui. « Beyond The Pale » ou « The Sun Is My Destroyer » ne sont que des boucheries de plus dans leur répertoire. Aussi jetez-vous vite sur Exhibit B : The Human Condition ou regrettez à jamais une expérience unique. Puisse la série alphabétique se poursuivre jusqu’à ce que mort s’en suive !
