Originaire de l’autre coté du monde, PESTILENTIAL SHADOWS n’en est pas un ovni pour autant. D’autres groupes extrêmes venant également d’Australie ont déjà chahuté nos tympans : je pense à DESTROYER 666, ABYSSIC HATE, DROWNING THE LIGHT ou encore NAZXUL. In Memorian, Ill Omen est le troisième enregistrement longue durée de PESTILENTIAL SHADOWS qui pour cet enregistrement, a gardé le même line-up que pour le précédent opus Crused.
PESTILENTIAL SHADOWS fait un Black Metal dans la continuité des illustres albums des années 1990, gardant les valeurs et les principes, rendant hommage avec bravoure, honneur et conviction à cette période historique du Black Metal. Les australiens ne font pas dans la démesure : pas de tempo hallucinant, de violence gratuite et inutile, le style pratiqué privilégie les mid-tempo, les mélodies sombres avec de nombreux arpèges mélancoliques, froids, développant des ambiances noires (« Ecclesia Moriendi »).
La production est assez claire, typiquement années 90, où les guitares saturées grésillent et le chant hurlé est légèrement en retrait, ce qui est particulièrement appréciable. Elle est parfaitement adaptée à l’atmosphère dégagée par le disque.
Les riffs sont souvent répétitifs, les structures prévisibles, mais il ne franchis jamais la frontière de l’ennui ou de la monotonie : dans la lignée des old FORGOTTEN TOMB ou SHINING, In Memorian, Ill Omen cache bien des sonorités qui tiennent en haleine sans que l’on s’en aperçoive !
Avec un album de la trempe de In Memorian, Ill Omen, PESTILENTIAL SHADOWS ne révolutionne pas le genre, n’invente rien, mais propose des titres inspirés, classique certes, mais composé et exécuté avec honnêteté et efficacité. Ce troisième opus est donc une réussite, malgré un classicisme total. De toute manière PESTILENTAL SHADOWS ne se soucie pas des nouveaux codes commerciaux… pour lui le temps s’est arrêté à la fin des années 1990…
