Un guitariste qui fait preuve de doigtée et une promo qui proclame : « L’album qui va vous éclater le fion ! », c'est tout un programme… Ce programme, c'est J.C. Jess, le Monsieur Heavy de la Haute-Savoie, qui nous l’a concocté. Ce manque de finesse promotionnel ne donne toutefois qu’une image tronquée du style pratiqué, car si les Français officient dans un Heavy Hard, qui lorgne parfois nettement vers le Thrash, celui-ci respire plus la technique que la bière. D’ailleurs, comme J.C. Jess l’indique lui-même à nos confrères de Metallian : « Mon état d’esprit quand je fais un solo n’est pas : je vais faire quelque chose de joli et harmonique !, mais plutôt : je vais vous en mettre plein le cul. » Entre le cul et le fion, on est servis… Wake of the Dead ne se révèle pas démonstratif pour autant et même si J.C. JESS est un projet solo et que les guitares se taillent la part du lion, le travail de compo est réel… et varié, au risque d’un manque d’homogénéité, mais l’on saura apprécier le final Heavy Doom de « Just on You » ou l’accélération qui vient clore « Moment of Lightness ». Cette variété est une histoire de goût mais aussi le pendant nécessaire d’un homme qui cherche d’abord à laisser libre cours à l’étendue de son talent de guitariste. Shredder oblige. Wake of the Dead évolue ainsi d’un Hard Rock plus traditionnel (« Moment of Lightness ») au plus mainstream à la GUNS’N ROSES (« Innocence ? ») au plus Heavy, voire même Thrash, plus proche tantôt d’un JUDAS PRIEST (« Just on You ») tantôt d’un MEGADETH (« Wake of the Dead : A new Life ») aux ballades (« Back », « I don’t need you »). Et si l’intro de « Moment of Lightness » s’avère frustrante en raison de sa courte durée, d’autres sont bien là pour nous clouer le bec, comme sur « Wake of the Dead : A new Life » ou encore « Walking », probablement le titre le plus démonstratif de l’album. JC Jess a envie de se faire plaisir. Et ce n’est pas moi qui lui reprocherai.
