Au fil de sa carrière le groupe suédois TIAMAT n’a jamais cessé d’évoluer, virevoltant du Doom Death, au Goth Psychédélique et au Rock Gothique. L’album Wildhoney n’échappe pas à la règle. Quatrième album de la formation (enfin formation, le leader Johan Edlund s’étant autoproclamé seul membre officiel puisqu’étant le seul présent depuis la formation du groupe), celui-ci délaisse un peu le coté Doom Death pour quelque chose de plus personnel et de plus aérien, voir expérimental, incorporant même du clavier à ses compositions. Une grande première.
Une chose m’impressionnera toujours chez les groupes de Metal scandinave, c’est leur faculté à retransmettre les émotions dans leur musique. L’intro de Wildhoney particulièrement relaxante avec ses gazouillis d‘oiseaux me perturbe un peu. Je croyais que c’était un album de Doom mais les premières notes de « Whatever That Hurts » me font réaliser que je ne me suis pas trompé. Alternant voix claires et chant guttural, parties de guitares en arpège et gros accords d’une lourdeur impressionnante, ce morceau est une véritable bombe. S’ensuit « The Ar » avec son rythme un peu plus Heavy, ses chœurs entrainants, et son intermède planant à souhait. « 25th Flour » instrumentale particulièrement sombre et déjantée m’achève. C’est à partir de ce moment là que l’album évolue tout doucement vers des contrées plus expérimentales, avec des morceaux comme « Gaia » et « Visionnaire » tout simplement géniaux. « Kaleidoscope » et les trois morceaux suivant sont plus doux et plus planants, pouvant être considérés comme les prémices de A Deeper Kind Of Slumber l’album qui suivra quelques années plus tard, plus psychédélique.
Wildhoney est, pour moi, un excellent album de Doom Goth Metal. Johan est toujours aussi inspiré et sa voix toujours aussi envoûtante, me faisant penser à maintes reprises à celle de Fernando Ribeiro, leader de MOONSPELL. Il a aussi encore une fois eu l’intelligence de s’entourer de musiciens performants, notamment Magnus, le guitariste, qui nous offre ici des parties de guitares, pas piquées des hannetons. Le tout est terriblement efficace et varié, même si au final le son me semble un peu froid, voir terne, ce qui apporte du cachet à cet album, et le lui reprocher serait chipoter.
