Après avoir découvert il y a peu le groupe PAGANIZER avec leur album Carnage Junkie, c’est à leur dernière production en date que je me suis attelé : Scandinavian Warmachine. Bon, je dois l’avouer tout de suite, je pense qu’il n’est pas judicieux de se faire deux albums de ce groupe de manière si rapprochée. En effet, comme le groupe a une fâcheuse tendance à viser l’efficace plutôt que l’original, on se retrouve souvent face au même genre de riffs ou à des plans similaires. Et l’impression d’écouter un peu toujours la même chose est donc encore plus présente après une trentaine de morceaux qu’après une quinzaine. Donc, le laps de temps entre deux écoutes d’albums différents doit être au moins égale à celui entre deux visites chez le proctologue.
Sinon, c’est quoi t’est-ce qu’on a dans cet album ? Eh bien, du Death Metal old school pur souche avec un son de guitare bien granuleux, une basse bien présente et une batterie pas très originale mais qui tape comme il faut. Du PAGANIZER en somme. Je ferais toujours les mêmes remarques : c’est pas parce que ce n’est pas original que ce n’est pas intéressant et agréable à l’écoute, même si ce n’est pas indispensable. Mais je pense que le groupe devrait sincèrement arrêter de vouloir mettre des blast de temps en temps parce qu’il a vraiment beaucoup de mal à les tenir correctement (« Punishment Through Defeat »). Les mid tempo sont beaucoup plus appréciables et permette de jouer des riffs prompts à décoller les cervicales proprement et sans baver (« Colder »). Sinon, on notera une légère incursion de mélodie sur « Morbid Panzer Batallion », un passage teinté de Doom sur « Bonesaw Bonanza » et un riff qu’aurait put jouer DISMEMBER dans « The Flesh ».
Finalement, c’est un nouvel album du groupe, sans prise de risque mais sans déception non plus. Une bonne chose aurait pu être de réduire le nombre de morceaux et/ou la durée de ces morceaux afin d’avoir moins de lassitude, mais bon, on fait ce qu’on peut avec ce qu’on a.
