Troisième album pour les Suisses de KRUGER, et le constat est là : leur identité déjà si particulière à la base, s’affine de plus en plus, pour les poser en leaders d’un genre qui ne tolère pas les approximations.
Il s’agit là d’un Post Hardcore fameux dont nous parlons, qu’il serait si facile de réduire à l’état de simple Sludge, si les raccourcis étaient le meilleur moyen de banaliser une musique.
Alors oui, l’ensemble est lourd, dissonant, à l’image d’un VIRUS de The Black Flux, mais les accélérations constantes du tempo, les écorchures sévères des vocaux, et l’énergie déployée tout au long de ces 9 titres ne me permettent pas de les affilier totalement à un mouvement unique.
C’est à un monolithe taggé que nous avons affaire là. Un bâtiment solide comme le roc, austère et qui pourtant se découvre plein de surprises, de couleurs et d’ambiances. Une vérité assénée d’une manière brutale, mais pourtant avec toutes les nuances inhérentes au désir de compréhension progressif.
On pourrait sans ambages parler de NEUROSIS bien sur, pour les similitudes de timbre entre Kelly Scott et Reno. Mais aussi pour ces constructions musicales amples, ces riffs qui traînent dans l’espace en prenant bien soin de concasser le libre arbitre de l’auditeur potentiel.
Il y a du UNSANE aussi, pour cette façon de salir un son, et d’éructer des textes comme si sa vie en dépendait.
Du ISIS bien sur, pour cet acharnement à compresser les émotions, et à déstabiliser de fait l’équilibre entre la perception et l’interprétation.
Du titre d’ouverture, « The Ox », rempli de contretemps qui annihilent tout effort de repère, jusqu’aux 7 minutes de « Turpitudes », envahies de haine et de ressentiment, en passant par le formidable « Our Cemetary Is Full Of Strangers », tout donne l’impression d’un extraordinaire chaos sonore maîtrisé à l’extrême, d’une armée de rats contrôlés par une simple flûte virtuelle.
La production, touffue, étouffée, accentue cette sensation de claustrophobie, de prison de l’esprit dont on ne sort qu’à certaines conditions, difficiles à accepter. Car qui souhaite vraiment s’échapper de cette cellule sonore, qui reflète à merveille l’état du monde actuel, plein de contradictions, ou l’homme n’a plus beaucoup de chance de s’en sortir indemne ?
La voix de Reno se pose en juge ultime, et il est quasiment impossible de nier son postulat final.
Pour vivre, il faut souffrir, pour se sentir vivant, il faut éprouver la douleur, la joie, et s’exposer au regard d’autrui, sans en craindre les reproches.
KRUGER nous livre ici une vérité nue, qu’il faut admettre comme définitive. La musique étant le moyen d’introspection le plus délicieux, autant s’y livrer entièrement.
