Trois ans après un Secret Society diablement bien troussé, Joey, John et la bande des suédois reviennent dare-dare sur le devant de la scène avec un nouvel opus, Last Look At Eden.
Comme je l’avais demandé à Mic lors d’une interview, je m’interrogeais sur le sens de ce titre. Car le parallèle avec un Prisonners In Paradise qui sonna le glas de la première partie de la carrière du groupe était plus qu’évident. Alors regard sur le passé, bilan, conclusion, qu’était on en droit d’attendre de EUROPE ?
Les premiers doutes de viabilité avaient été balayés d’un revers de perfecto lors du Hellfest édition 2009 par une performance scénique fabuleuse, la meilleure du festival selon la majorité des spectateurs.
Alors si le combo avait réussi à voler la vedette à d’autres groupes d’orientation plus violente et plus moderne, il n’y avait plus de questions à se poser. Oubliés les gimmick faciles, les permanentes fashion, et les ados pré pubères qui reprenaient les refrains en chœur. EUROPE est définitivement redevenu ce qu’il aurait toujours du rester, un gang de Hard Rock pur et dur, adepte de la puissance et des mélodies.
Confirmer tout cela ? Rien de plus facile. Ecoutez le dernier né. C’est une tuerie.
Se démarquant intelligemment du vecteur « Rock rapide » qui animait les sillons de Secret Society, EUROPE n’a pas choisi la facilité, car dès les premières écoutes, le climat se fait lourd, pesant (mais pas empesé), et les rythmiques sont bien volontiers écrasantes. La présence d’un orchestre qui souligne tout le côté grandiloquent de certaines compositions ne fait qu’ajouter à cette atmosphère tendue (« New Love In Town » par exemple).
Et on pourrait facilement comparer le choix du groupe à un autre de ses anciens confrères, BON JOVI pour ne pas le citer, qui entre Slippery When Wet et New Jersey avait complètement changé son fusil d’épaule pour revenir à quelque chose de plus naturel, plus roots.
Mais ne nous y trompons pas, EUROPE à encore des bollocks en acier, et « The Beast » suinte d’énergie, de fureur de convaincre, et d’envie de tout exploser on stage.
Une certaine homogénéité anime tout Last Look At Eden, et les exceptions ne font que renforcer les qualités intrinsèques de l’album. Pour preuve, le splendide « In My Time » dont le grand ZEP n’aurait pas renié la magnifique intro, digne de « In My Time Of Dying ». La guitare de John NORUM flirte avec la perfection, et chacune de ses interventions est pertinente et pleine de feeling. Joey prouve encore qu’il n’est plus le chanteur pour midinettes en pamoison comme on lui a reproché si souvent.
Quand au refrain de « Run With The Angels », il suinte de hargne par tous les pores…jusqu’au solo imparable qui achève de convaincre les plus sceptiques !
On sent même l’influence d’un groupe comme THE TEA PARTY pointer le bout de son nez et de ses influences orientales sur le fameux « No Stone Unturned ». Les arrangements de cordes font mouche, le chant est investi et le riff redondant…
Le public du Hellfest ne s’y était donc pas trompé. Si ces milliers de headbangers ont réservé un accueil triomphal à EUROPE, ça n’est pas par nostalgie, ni par condescendance ou par ironie, c’est tout simplement parce que c’est un putain de grand groupe !
Un dernier regard sur l’Eden ? Avec une telle musique et une telle foi, va falloir vous y faire les gars. Ca m’étonnerait sincèrement que vous vous éloigniez du paradis très longtemps…
