Nouveau venu sur la scène australienne, il n’aura pas fallu beaucoup de temps à CEREMONY pour se faire remarquer par le label culte Mausoleum et se faire signer. Et à en juger par l’écoute de leur premier album éponyme, on peut comprendre pourquoi.
Car CEREMONY a bien des armes pour faire plier le public international. Tout d’abord, un style abordable. Des compos accrocheuses. Des instrumentistes très capables. Et une production rutilante.
Autant d’atouts incontournables pour s’assurer une bonne place sur les scènes du monde entier. Car la musique du groupe doit formidablement bien s’adapter aux conditions du live, avec autant d’hymnes potentiels au compteur.
Alors on passe de la relecture Néo impeccable de « Cheese », et son riff élastique, du très NICKELBACK/SOUNDGARDEN « Filthy Grudge », au hit imparable « Seventh Wonder » ses couplets en arpège et son refrain entêtant, en passant par le thème très syncopé de « Active Mind », et la ballade finaude « Here All Alone », qui commence pourtant bien mal et sirupeuse cela dit…
Le Pop Rock peinard à aussi droit à son traitement de faveur, et à cette occasion, le groupe démontre un talent multicarte, et se découvre en combo mainstream produisant de la musique d’excellente facture, écoutable par tous.
Des morceaux comme « Lost Soul », « Down Day » ou « Without You » auraient une place de choix sur les ondes si celles ci n’étaient pas obsédées par la Dance à deux sous et le pseudo R’nB factice, et sur « My Life », le groupe se permet même de singer leur aîné Jimmy BARNES, dans un Rock mélodique que le teigneux australien n’aurait pas renié !
D’une manière générale, l’album reste très accessible, même si les titres les plus costauds ont été placés en premier pour mieux séduire le metalleux. Ce qui provoque une sorte de rupture un peu bizarre une fois la ballade passée, à tel point qu’on se demande parfois si l’on a affaire au même groupe.
Mais ceci tient plus de la remarque que du reproche, car CEREMONY nous offre en final un « Venom In Denim » tellement hargneux qu’on est prêt à leur pardonner bien des choses. Le timbre à la Jason McMaster de Cameron fait merveille, comme tout au long du Cd d’ailleurs, et un parrainage par nos kangourous favoris d’AC/DC s’imposerait presque !
Dans tous les cas, CEREMONY nous présente la une bien belle carte de visite, et la joie ressentie à l’écoute de leur premier effort ne demande qu’à être confirmée on stage !
