Et hop, encore un groupe dont j’entends parler depuis longtemps et que je n’avais jamais eu l’occasion d’écouter et pour lequel l’erreur est réparée. PAGANIZER fait partie de ces mastodontes que l’on doit de connaître ne serait-ce qu’un peu. En effet, il fait partie des derniers groupes à nous pondre un Death Metal aussi old school. Et pour le groupe, pas question de changer de ligne de conduite. Peut-être passera-t-il à côté de nouveautés intéressantes, mais le compromis ne fait partie de son langage. Aussi, il faut s’attendre à se prendre quelque chose de massif dans les dents avec ce Carnage Junkie. Les pauses sont aussi présentes dans leurs morceaux que le talent l’est dans ceux de Carla Bruni. Carnage Junkie aurait dû sortir en 2006, mais ce n’est que fin 2008 qu’on a pu le voir arriver dans les bacs. Ceci explique peut-être la présence de cinq morceaux bonus en fin de galette.
Donc, comme on est là dans les racines du genre, exit toutes les fioritures que les années ont pu lui ajouter. Pas de solos, pas de morceaux à rallonge, pas de plans inutiles. Tout est fait pour aller droit au but dans un souci d’efficacité maximum. Une preuve ? « Death Plain And Simple » qui ouvre les hostilités en moins d’une minute trente ! Bon, on n’est pas non plus dans un album de Grind, même si certains plans y font penser (« Massdeath Maniac »), donc tous les morceaux ne seront pas bâtis sur la même formule (au niveau structure, parce qu’au niveau des riffs, c’est une autre histoire), mais on n’excède que très rarement les quatre minutes. En général, les riffs sont simples, ne comportent pas cinquante notes à la seconde, mais puissance et efficience sont toujours là. Après, certains morceaux sont moins inspirés que les autres (« Carnage Junkie », « Grinded And Exiled »). Mais certains autres savent aussi varier les plaisirs pour essayer de poser durant quelques secondes une ambiance (« Just Here Rotting », « Heal Not Your Wounds ») qui sont la plupart du temps assez malsaine. S’il y a bien quelque chose de commun à tous les morceaux c’est leur côté Thrash indéniable. Comme quoi, les racines des racines ne sont trop loin non plus. Ce qui m’a le plus dérangé ce sont les blast un peu trop présents, et pas forcément super bien tenus (« Carnage Junkie »). Au niveau de la production, on a d’un côté les douze morceaux de base et les bonus, qui eux ont un son vraiment plus root (pas crade, parce qu’on entend bien tout, mais ça gratte plus par où ça passe).
Au final, un album sans doute pas indispensable, mais qui fera toujours plaisir à écouter de temps à autre pour se ressourcer dans quelque chose de plus fondamental.
