Arf, AT VANCE … En voilà un groupe qui a raté le coche, et qui se retrouve à jouer les éternels seconds couteaux. En plus, rater le coche une fois c’est déjà dur, mais alors deux fois … A la sortie de son prometteur premier album (No Escape en 1999), AT VANCE avait laissé entrevoir un potentiel intéressant. Puis la bombe Only Human (quatrième opus, en 2002) aurait du les propulser sur le devant de la scène. Mais allez savoir pourquoi, rien n’a tournée en faveur du groupe germanique. Ajoutez à cela le départ de son vocaliste Oliver Hartmann qui faillit lui porter le coup fatal …
Mais il en faut plus pour décourager son leader, principal compositeur et virtuose de la six-cordes, j’ai nommé Olaf Lenk. Après un bref passage au micro de Mats Leven (ex-Malmsteen), c'est le méritant Rick Altzi qui en a hérité. Méritant, parce que ce mec a une belle voix, rauque et chaude comme votre serviteur les aime. Cela dit on peut reprocher à Lenk de toujours dégoter des chanteurs du même style, puisque Oliver Hartmann avait déjà ce timbre si proche du grand David Coverdale (WHITESNAKE). Après, la reprise de "Wishing Well" de FREE paraît toute naturelle, étant donné que Paul Rodgers (chanteur de FREE) influença Coverdale, qui lui-même influença Hartmann, etc ... Vous suivez toujours ?
Du coup, AT VANCE, qui se revendiquait comme un groupe exclusivement voué au Metal néo-classique au début de sa carrière, touche un peu à tout sur Ride The Sky. Un fourre-tout musical déjà perceptible sur VII, l'album précédent. On peut entendre du Metal mélodique à la MASTERPLAN ("The Last In Line") ... mais sans la classe de Jorn et Roland Grapow. Ou du WHITESNAKE en plus couillu ("Torn - Burn Like Fire") ... mais qui ne décolle pas. Ou du Speed Metal néo-classique à l'ancienne ("End Of Days") avec un refrain d'une naïveté à pleurer ... "only the strongs survive" ... "killing to civilize" .... Ou un "Ride The Sky", dans la même veine, sans aucune surprise. En fait, c'est ça, Olaf Lenk ré-exploite à outrance le filon des premiers albums d'AT VANCE mais il manque la petite étincelle. Il est très triste d'admettre et d'accepter qu'en 2009, AT VANCE n'est plus que l'ombre de lui-même ...
Et même si on a encore droit à l'éternelle adaptation de musique classique pour guitare (ici, encore un extrait des "Quatre Saisons" de Vivaldi, sans grand intérêt), on échappe à la traditionnelle reprise d'ABBA. Remarquez, ces petites reprises faisaient office d'écart agréable ... et auraient sûrement fait du bien à un album trop convenu. Ils sont rares, les moments où notre coeur s'emballe ... Les vraies surprises de Ride The Sky se nomment "Salvation Day" et "Fallin'". Le premier symbolise le mixage réussi de Power Metal, airs celtiques et tradition néo-classique. Le deuxième envoie un mid-tempo mélancolique, entre AOR et Metal appuyé, où Rick Altzi fait des merveilles. Ah oui j'oubliais ... au sujet de ce titre, "Fallin'" ... Merci au label d'éviter de nous envoyer des titres qui grésillent ... Déjà que le son n'est pas folichon malgré un passage au Finnvox Studio de Mika Jussila ... Voilà qui provoque beaucoup d'insatisfactions, surtout pour un huitième album. Le début de la fin ?
