Difficile exercice de style auquel se sont livrés nos Suisses préférés de THE YOUNG GODS. Connus pour leurs bidouillages électroniques de génie, leurs expérimentations sonores sans limites, ils se livrent sur ce Knock On Wood – The Acoustic Sessions l’âme à nu…
On pouvait légitimement craindre le pire d’un album acoustique, surtout de la part de bricoleurs digitaux, mais le constat est inéluctable : c’est une réussite totale.
Alors non, nous n’aurons pas affaire ici à du fond de tiroir pour faire une pause ou enrichir encore plus une maison de disque avide de devises fraîches, et inutile non plus de prendre comme référence les nombreux « unplugged » sortis jusque là par quelques combos peu inspirés, car nous parlons bien des YOUNG GODS n’est ce pas ? Ces musiciens qui seraient capables d’accoucher d’un chef d’œuvre avec pour seul support un vieil ukulélé et une guimbarde rouillée ?
Oui c’est un fait. Franz et sa bande ne sont pas une référence depuis tant d’années par hasard. L’inspiration, ils l’ont toujours eu. Et même lorsqu’il s’agit de dépouiller leur musique à l’extrême, ils s’arrangent pour la rendre encore plus riche. C’est sidérant. Presque incroyable. Et pourtant, c’est là, devant vous.
Il serait vulgaire de parler de « hits » à leur sujet, mais les must de leur discographie ressortent transfigurés de cette relecture.
« Gasoline Man » ressemble à s’y méprendre au groove de CANNED HEAT, et si la première partie se fait sobre comme un blues douze mesure, la seconde explose dans un débordement d’énergie qui laisse sans voix. Sauf Franz, qui survole les débats avec une maîtrise impressionnante. Son chant se fait tour à tour doucereux, inquiétant, charmeur, roublard, puissant, intime…Un vocaliste d’exception, pour le moins.
« Charlotte » transpire le stupre, celui qui animait les rues de Pigalle, il y a encore quelques années. On peut respirer la moiteur, caresser la luxure du bout des doigts, sans se les salir…C’est beau comme du Frehel, enivrant comme du Damia, l’absinthe absolue, l’opium opère sur la peur, et l’on s’envole…
« Ghost Rider », arrive à s’abreuver à l’essence même de SUICIDE, et tel un mantra dont il est impossible de se défaire, agit au creux même de nos sens et nous emmène si loin au fond de nous-mêmes, que ses 12 minutes paraissent passer comme dans un songe. Le temps s’arrête, et nos névroses fondent comme la glace au printemps. Magique, si magique…Franz se fait shaman et ses longues invocations planeront encore longtemps au dessus de notre mur d’illusions…
« Longue Route » arrive à se faire plus violent que son homonyme électrique, par sa violence sous jacente, et sa tension qui fait perler la sueur sur notre front. Une fois de plus, la science des arrangements du groupe fait merveille, et le final préfigure un chaos total qui nous attend un jour ou l’autre.
« She Rains » et son sitar instaure un climat oppressant et pourtant dessine des paysages magnifiques, suivant les Yogi dans leur méditation, pour en retirer la mirifique substance. La paix…N’est ce pas ce que nous cherchons tous ?
Le « Freedom » de Richie HAVEN est une déclaration d’intention. Pas une simple reprise. Les GODS s’approprient ce titre, et nous le resservent encore bouillant. La syncope est contagieuse, quasi Rythm n’ Blues. Et lorsque Franz nous invective avec ses « Clap your hands!», comment refuser ??
Non, je renonce. Je ne trouverai aucune imperfection, aucune scorie, rien a redire, et comment pourrait il en être autrement ? Moi qui suis les YOUNG GODS depuis L’eau Rouge, je n’ai jamais été déçu. Je ne le suis pas plus aujourd’hui. Et je placerai même Knock On Wood au somment de leur œuvre, pourtant déjà si intense.
Intense, c’est le mot. Un comble pour un album acoustique non ?
