En cette chaleur estivale de bon aloi pour le tourisme (ai-je déjà précisé à quel point j’aime les touristes ?), je vous propose une plongée dans les eaux tourmentées du Thrash Death de tradition. Point d’artifice de composition, point de torture d’exécution, juste du bon bourrin qui dégage les intestins, mais sans laisser de trace le lendemain.
THANATOS, puisqu’il faut bien appeler un chat un chat, a réussi à acquérir le statut de groupe culte à l’aide d’un seul et unique album, Emerging From The Netherworlds, assez remarqué par tous les esthètes de la débauche au début des années 90. Un split inexplicable les fit se replonger dans les ténèbres, avant de les voir en émerger juste avant l’an 2000.
Depuis, le combo batave fait ce qu’il peut pour répandre la bonne parole, et reconnaissons leur le mérite de le faire efficacement, si ce n’est avec grande originalité.
On retrouve sur ce Justified Genocide (très judicieusement accompagné d’un imprimé expliquant le thème des textes), tous les ingrédients du brutal pas banal qui agitait les tignasses à la fin des années 80. De rythmiques Thrash explosives en breaks purement Death, THANATOS ne sombre pourtant pas dans la monotonie grâce à des compos accrocheuses, et des variations aérant l’ensemble.
Le titre d’ouverture, « They Feed On Fear » aurait pu sans honte figurer sur les meilleurs albums de DARK ANGEL ou EVIL DEAD, voire INCUBUS, tant son riff virevoltant s’écrase à merveille sur un chorus plombé soudain interrompu par un solo inspiré.
Car nous y voila, c’est bien de ça dont il s’agit, les groupes cités plus hauts font ici figure de référence, et la preuve en est donné à la fin de l’album, avec en guise d’outro, une reprise bien sentie du « The Burning Of Sodom » de nos anges sombres préférés. Reprise honnête il faut l’admettre, bien que le génie vocal d’un Don Doty manque à l’appel.
De génie il n’est point question sur cet album. Juste une entreprise sincère de déconstruction par le respect des codes, tout en y ajoutant sa patte personnelle. Ainsi, l’intro de « Destruction.Chaos.Creation », suivie par un thème tout à fait hypnotisant est un modèle de compo intelligente.
Quand au tempo martial de « Apostles Of Damnation », rien à redire sauf qu’il annonce avec flair un couplet plus lourd qu’une baffe de The Rock dans la tronche.
Un album que j’ai pris plaisir à écouter, et que je sortirai sans doute de temps en temps de son boîtier pour en savourer une fois de plus l’énergie. THANATOS n’est pas le premier de la classe, mais sa moyenne est plutôt bonne. Il récolte donc les encouragements du conseil de classe.
