Frais combo tout neuf venu nous prêcher la bonne parole de son Canada natal, BLACKGUARD n’est rien de moins que la nouvelle signature de Nuclear Blast, qui est allé dénicher cette perle rare au milieu de 2000 autres groupes, à l’issu de son Nuclear Blast MySpace Band Contest de 2008 !
Fondé en 2001 en tant que PROFUGUS MORTIS, et évoluant à l’époque dans un Black de bon aloi, quoiqu’un peu rudimentaire, BLACKGUARD a décidé après quelques années de pratique d’abandonner ses oripeaux lucifériens pour un costume Pagan/Folk/Thrash un peu plus seyant. Grand bien lui en pris, car le créneau Black devenant de plus en plus surchargé, leur mouture qui triture les esgourdes et vide les gourdes s’avèrera au final beaucoup plus séduisante et propre à conquérir un marché de plus en plus exigeant.
Que retenir donc de ce premier effort, qui place au même plan agression Thrash de tous les instants, arrangements Folk sautillants et vocaux écorchés bien saignants ?
Eh bien, qu’après une intro très grandiloquente digne d’une foire médiévale, la farandole part pleine bourre pour ne jamais s’arrêter !
Sorte de crossover bien méchant entre CRADLE OF FILTH, PAZUZU, DIMMU BORGIR et IN FLAMES, les Canadiens ne se posent pas de questions, et rentrent dans le lard sans jamais faiblir !
Alors bien sur, bien des batailles restent à gagner, et celle de la diversité ne sera sans doute pas la plus facile ! Si le chant reste plein de hargne et la rythmique âpre au combat, si les guitares savent se faire volubiles sans pour autant tomber dans la mièvrerie, les morceaux ont souvent tendance à tomber dans la redite, et la passe de trois gagnerait à être étoffée d’une botte secrète au risque de voir ses adversaires anticiper les coups trop longtemps à l’avance !
Quant aux arrangements, leur authenticité 100% AOC reste à prouver, et le gang gagnerait franchement à les faire sortir de terre plutôt que d’un clavier bon marché qui n’impressionne aucune armée !
Mais ne les faisons pas déjà poser genou à terre, car à l’occasion de quelques mouvements surprise et bien inspirés (« The Last We Wage », implacable, « Cinder » très AT THE GATES), les assaillants savent se jouer du terrain et occuper l’espace de manière à s’offrir une force de frappe maximale !
Alors de là à avoir remporté une guerre contre 2000 autres concurrents, il n’y a qu’un pas que la subjectivité du label m’empêche de franchir…
Néanmoins pour un premier album, ne brandissons pas encore le bouclier du rejet, et laissons le temps à ces soldats d’affûter leurs épées et de revenir fins prêts pour un duel qui s’annonce intéressant…
