Depuis Seven Seals, PRIMAL FEAR semble bien décidé à prendre une direction plus personnelle et légèrement différente de celle de ses débuts. Les allemands ont intégré des éléments atmosphériques dans leur Heavy Metal pour donner un second souffle à leur carrière et on ne peut que constater que l’effet attendu est des plus réussis pour leur huitième opus.
Après une petite intro (« Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead »), l’album démarre réellement avec un « Riding The Eagle » des plus efficaces pour nous mettre en appétit. Le morceau n’est pas sans rappeler leurs jeunes cousins d’EDGUY, et on remarque d’emblée que PRIMAL FEAR a mit l’accent sur des chœurs massifs et harmonisés afin de donner un peu plus de profondeur et de relief à leur musique. Cette mise en bouche est suivie par le mid-tempo « Six Times Dead » à la rythmique martiale qui dévaste tout sur son passage grâce son refrain tonitruant. Les teutons explorent de nouveaux paysages métalliques en utilisant des sonorités plus modernes (« Soar ») sans pour autant perdre leur identité. Et que les fans de la première heure se rassurent, des titres comme « Killbound » ou encore « Smith & Wesson » prouvent que PRIMAL FEAR reste PRIMAL FEAR, gros riffs bien gras et double grosse caisse façon sulfateuse viennent appuyer les éléments plus actuels.
Si au départ, on pouvait penser que le nouveau groupe de Ralf Scheepers allait devenir un énième combo allemand de Heavy Metal basique avec l’éponyme Primal Fear et le second, Jaws Of Death, l’évolution discographique démontre que les mauvaises langues qui les avaient enterrés se trouvaient dans l’erreur. L’arrivée du batteur canadien Randy Black (ex-ANNIHILATOR) en 2003, celle du guitariste suédois Magnus Karlsson (ex-ALLEN/LANDE) pour l’enregistrement de New Religion, et plus récemment celle du guitariste Henny Wolker (SINNER), ont réellement donné un second souffle au groupe qui sait constamment se renouveler et n’hésite pas à aller de l’avant sans craindre de surprendre son public. 16.6 (Before The Devil…) est un excellent album qui saura ravir autant les die-hard fans que les amateurs plus ouverts d’esprits. On en redemande et on attend la tournée avec impatience.
