N’importe quel demeuré qui s’intéresse un minimum à la sphère Metal (avec un grand « M », comme dans mammouth, mastodonte ou marjolaine) connaît DIMMU BORGIR. Adulé par les uns, détesté par les autres, leur réputation n’est plus à faire. Ceux qui s’y intéressent d’encore plus près n’ont pas omis de remarquer qu’entre tous ces chevelus dodus se dandine souvent un homme dont le crâne a autant de cheveux qu’il y’a d’eau sur Mars et qui éblouit littéralement l’auditoire de par sa clarté. Galder pour les intimes, qui martyrise le bas peuple avec ses copains norvégiens depuis Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia et qui s’est lancé bien avant dans le grand bain, acquérant de l’expérience avec un projet dont il est désormais seul commanditaire, OLD MAN’S CHILD. Ce side-project a donc le mérite de mettre à nu les talents du monsieur, qui n’est pas seulement un fieffé gratteur mais aussi un vocaliste, bassiste et claviériste d’envergure.
Son retour sur le devant de la scène, quatre ans après Vermin, coïncide d’ailleurs à un certain passage à vide dans la carrière de DIMMU BORGIR, dont les frasques musicales n’en finissent plus de faire couler l’encre. Galder, de son vrai nom Thomas Rune Andersen préfère quant à lui faire couler le sang. Le sang, justement, il en est déjà question avec la pochette de l’album, dont on ne doute pas qu’elle soit hautement blasphématrice, mais qui fait davantage preuve de qualité graphique que cérébrale. Au niveau des chansons, si on n’était pas au courant que le type officiait dans la bande à Shagrath, on s’en serait douté. Son instrument de prédilection étant la guitare, on ne s’offusquera pas d’entendre des cordes très tranchées, incisives, éloquentes et décorées de nombreux froufrous en tous genres (des solos aux décélérations en passant par du sweap ou même du shred, toutes les techniques y passent). Les riffs sont typiquement Black (quelle surprise !) mais tendent parfois à tomber dans le Death comme un ivrogne tomberait dans la rigole. Aidé par le professeur de batterie Peter Wildoer (qui a déjà frappé pour ARCH ENEMY, AGATHODAIMON, SOILWORK…), Galder maintient un niveau musical tout à fait honorable pour un instrumentiste hyperactif. Son sens de la composition s’avère plus aiguisé que jamais et je ne serais pas étonné que Mustis soit venu lui donner un petit coup de main sur les partitions de claviers qui sonnent très « borgiennes ». Malheureusement, la balance pour la place accordée aux divers instruments est bien déséquilibrée, puisqu’il faut absolument tendre l’oreille pour percevoir les nombreuses subtilités des parties de piano ainsi que les sessions de basse. Audibles, certes. Mais trop en retrait et c’est sans aucun doute un défaut pour un essai de Black mélodique. On remarquera tout de même d’excellentes compositions comme l’éponyme, « Path Of Destruction » (très militaire dans l’âme) et « On The Devil’s Throne », qui démarre par une acoustique terrible avant de sombrer dans un univers apocalyptique. Egalement, on notera que Thomas s’en sort bien au micro et que de l’entendre doubler de temps à autre Shagrath ne serait pas une mauvaise chose.
Qu’on ne s’y méprenne, Slaves Of The World n’est pas la sortie de l’année. Ce jet est tout simplement bon. Ni plus, ni moins. Malgré tout, il s’adressera à un public davantage friand de maîtrise et de dextérité que de culot et d’arrogance. Parce que Galder est un homme profondément bon, qui fait du Black Metal de bisounours pour un public somme toute pas très expert, mais toujours amateur de Metal bien ficelé et bien emballé. L’essentiel est là.
