RAIMUND BURKE (de) - Into My Arena (2008)

Complimenté pour son travail sur Get It (2005) par Jeff Kollman (Glenn Hughes Band) ou encore Charlie Dominici (DOMINICI), le guitariste germanique Raimund Burke (prononcez « Bourkeu ») a même trouvé son fan numéro un en la personne d’Uli Kusch. L’ancien batteur d’HELLOWEEN et MASTERPLAN a même demandé à son compatriote de lui composer une chanson pour son groupe BEAUTIFUL SIN.
Fruit résultant de cette requête si flatteuse, « Beautiful Sin » constitue évidemment le titre d’ouverture du nouvel album de Raimund, Into My Arena. Il n’est pas évident d’imaginer ce titre, ici dans sa version instrumentale, chanté par Magali Luyten. Et surtout, il révèle un guitariste techniquement bien au dessus de la moyenne, mais complètement crispé dans l’optique d’écrire pour un groupe. La suite d’Into My Arena laisse beaucoup plus d’espace à Raimund, débarrassé de la pression du contexte BEAUTIFUL SIN.
La chronique d’un disque instrumental sur Metal Impact implique toutefois que son auteur possède un sérieux background métallique. C’est bien le cas, le père Burke nous envoyant une bonne dose de riffs qui font secouer la tête (« Caged ») et de rythmiques groovy (« Still Searching »).
Le côté musclé sur Into The Arena doit être souligné car il donne une patate inhabituelle pour un disque de gratte instrumentale. Et cela ne cloisonne en aucun cas le bonhomme, qui ne se prive pas de jouer parfois plus funky, comme sur « Look Forward ». En bon guitariste soliste qu’il est, la démonstration est parfois de rigueur (« Off-Highway »), et sur « Rough Riff » on atteint des sommets satrianesques, avec descentes de manche et jolies mélodies à l’appui. En fait, tout le talent de Raimund se résume au titre éponyme, preuve du panel de sons et d’ambiances que le six-cordiste maîtrise à la quasi-perfection. Précisons également que Raimund assure le rôle de tous les instrumentistes, batteur et bassiste compris (la photo du livret est assez sympa d’ailleurs !).
A la fin de cet opus figurent deux chansons, les parties vocales étant assurées par Michael Keuter (c’est qui ? ….). Voilà un exercice délicat qui relance l’éternelle question : les guitar-heroes sont-ils faits pour jouer des vraies chansons, avec des vrais chanteurs ? Car « Don’t You Know » et « Wait For The Night », certes bien heavy, ne resteront pas dans les annales … On leur préfère aisément le titre « J.a.I.L.s. », tout en douceur, qui clôture un album bien loin des The Extremist ou Passion And Warfare, mais qui au moins fait la lumière sur un talentueux instrumentiste.
