Après Karybda en 2002, MINDLAG PROJECT sort la suite et fin de son diptyque en 2005, Skylla. Même si l’essence des morceaux est la même, une incursion moderne dans la mythologie grecque, le résultat est quant à lui bien différent. Au-dessus je dirais. Plus. Plus de son, plus de Thrash, plus de Hardcore. Bref, plus. C’est qu’en trois ans, il a pu s’en passer des choses. Le groupe a travaillé, est devenu plus carré, a certainement beaucoup appris sur lui-même et sur la direction qu’il voulait se donner. D’ailleurs, ce n’est pas pour rien que Skylla commence par une introduction aux cordes. « Desdemona » monte en puissance et cultive l’attente. Violoncelle et violon gagnent en intensité sur une mélodie simple mais parfaitement orchestrée et puis les guitares arrivent progressivement, comme elles avaient su le faire sur le « Blackened » de METALLICA. Cela vous donne une bonne idée de la montée que propose ce morceau. Et puis, ça pète ensuite. Une avalanche de gros riffs et de grosses rythmiques dans une production beaucoup plus travaillée et peaufinée. Les moyens ont sûrement aussi augmenté pour arriver au résultat désiré. Et on ne va pas s’en plaindre. Bon, cela reste quand même des riffs assez classiques, même s’ils font judicieusement headbanger. Il y a bien « Until The End » qui se permet de varier les plaisirs, de casser le rythme. Bonheur pour certains, hérésie pour d’autres. Mais MINDLAG PROJECT ne peut sagement rester sur ses acquis et c’est une bonne chose que de se mettre un peu en danger. D’ailleurs, le danger revient avec « Mika », un morceau plus complexe mais plus abouti aussi. « Guerilla » est un véritable brûlot qu’on ne peut louper. Mathieu s’y arrache les cordes vocales. D’ailleurs, son chant à lui aussi évolué. On le sent plus mûr. Mais, en contrepartie, il a un peu perdu de son éclectisme. Et c’est dommage ; c’est est plus linéaire.
Karybda m’avait interloqué. Skylla me fait dire que MINDLAG PROJECT est maintenant un groupe sur lequel il faut compter. D’ailleurs, leur album vient de sortir.
