Fascinant organe qu’est l’oreille. Loin de moi l’idée de mettre en doute vos connaissances en affirmant avec un culot et un air de premier de la classe mielleux que c’est par ces deux conduits que vous percevez les sons de la vie quotidienne. Mais saviez-vous que cet organe joue un rôle primordial dans la perception des mouvements du corps et surtout, dans l’équilibre ? C’est sur cette propriété trop souvent ignorée de l’opinion publique que se base WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH pour vous faire chuter. Reprenant le flambeau brulant du Mathcore cédé par THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, nos cinq berlinois d’origine font honneur à tous les niveaux à ce style bien plus intellectuel qu’il n’en a l’air. Ils avaient déjà sérieusement ébranlé les barrières de ce mouvement à mi-chemin entre Post-Harcore, Experimental et Free-Jazz avec leur Transmetropolitan de 2007. Avec In Shoals, ce n’est plus dans un train mais dans une fusée que l’on embarque.
C’est d’ailleurs incroyable de voir que derrière ces têtes d’intellos ou de bons copains avec qui tu t’autorises un resto huppé en fin de semaine, se dissimule un potentiel artistique que personne ne soupçonnerait. L’inspiration leur vient d’une planète lointaine, avec un sol rose fuchsia, un ciel jaune électrique et dont le nom contient plein de « X » et de « Z » accolés à une suite de chiffres incongrue. Le genre de planète qui ne va pas tarder à être découverte par une équipe de scientifiques tout aussi illuminés. Le voyage est somme toute rapide. Mais cette vitesse d’exécution n’est que la conséquence directe d’un moteur débridé. Entre « They Come In Shoals » et « Scully », on traverse en une tierce le gué de Bérézina pour gravir les cimes enneigées du Kilimandjaro (mémoire à Pascal Danel). Ce disque est un ascenseur émotionnel dont les rouages bien huilés ont été calculés par des hippocampes architectes. Plein de couleurs, de saveurs, In Shoals est une harmonie parfaite entre une brutalité à la mode (« No High Five For C.oward ») et des dissonances Jazz décomplexées en arrivage direct de l’Art Ensemble Of Chicago (« Justice From The Lips Of The Highest Bidder »). Et quand les deux se rencontrent, nous avons affaire à une création, un cocktail aux notes épicées qui pourrait se ranger sans peine aux côtés d’un Mojito édulcoré ou d’une réminiscence de l’Américano sur la carte du Buddha-Bar (« What Happens In The District… (Paper Agents) » ou « Stays In The District (I’m The Black Sheep Of Her Country) »). Freestyle, arrogance, professionnalisme sont quelques clés qui vous aideront à forcer la barricade WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH. On aurait pu râler devant la courte durée des compositions, pour être vraiment tatillon. Mais c’était sans compter sur les huit minutes dysentériques de « Scully », qui pleure encore à chaudes larmes d’avoir été séparée du beau Fox. Alors pour vraiment trouver quelque chose à redire, on se penchera sur des détails futiles. Comme la cover, qui aurait pu être plus représentative de son contenu. Qui aurait du être plus pétillante, moins abstraite. Mais après tout, est-ce un défaut ?
J’ai maintes fois avancé des arguments pour défendre ces nouveaux mouvements qui se font descendre en flèche par des fanatiques qui se proclament en manque d’oxygène mais qui crachent ouvertement sur la première bouffée d’air venue. HELLMOUTH, THE EYES OF A TRAITOR, WALLS OF JERICHO, KILL THE CLIENT, HIMSA, TANGAROA, j’en ai trouvé des moyens de vous familiariser intelligemment avec ce style trop vite enterré qu’est le Metalcore sous toutes ses formes (Death, Grind, Math, Hard, Thrash, Post- et Ante-). Mais WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH est devenu en deux albums ce qui se fait de mieux ; le must en la matière. En attendant le prochain…
