Houlala que voilà un album difficile à chroniquer ... Celui-là, votre serviteur l'a en sa possession depuis un moment déjà (plusieurs mois ?!!). Il ne prenait pas la poussière, non, non. Il a tourné, tourné, puis tourné et encore tourné sur la platine. Pas toujours en intégralité, mais il a tourné. Comme n'importe quel album de Metal progressif, Come Closer met les nerfs à rude épreuve. Non pas par manque de qualité, mais de par la complexité qu'il dégage : la multitude de styles abordés, la démonstration technique, l'anticonformisme permanent. C'était peut-être le but !
Petit rappel : CRYSALID est un quintet franco-suisse, fondé en 2003 et intégrant à ses début une chanteuse (Elisa Colacioppo) qui cède sa place en 2007 à Matthias Nussbaumer. Officiant dans un registre rappelant Robb Flynn (MACHINE HEAD) en voix claire ou Peter Tagtgren dans PAIN, Nussbaumer peine parfois à convaincre, ou du moins la principale question qui vient à l'esprit est : son chant est-il vraiment le plus approprié pour la musique de CRYSALID ? Certains webzines parlaient de "chanteuse exceptionnelle" et "d'ambiance épico-féérique" à l'époque de la démo Tears Are Dividing, l'intronisation de Matthias a sûrement remis en cause quelques fondements originaux de CRYSALID.
Néanmoins, le groupe y a sans aucun doute gagné en puissance. Il y a bien ces quelques voix "rap" sur fond de rythme saccadé qui ont tendance à m'irriter ("Come Closer"), mais dans l'ensemble CRYSALID demeure groupe de Metal progressif qui se respecte, où chaque membre maîtrise son instrument de A à Z, que ce soit Sébastien Perrad (batterie), Ilario Cavalière (synthé), Guillaume Giazzi (basse) ou Maxime Maulet (guitares). La basse slappe à tout va, les morceaux atteignent minimum les 5-6 minutes, les intros restent fidèles au style (les premières mesures de "Bewitched" proches de SYMPHONY X). On note même la présence d'une ballade à la NICKELBACK ou des ambiances orientales sur "Blind Fates".
Très vite, les défauts cités plus haut refont surface : il ne faut surtout pas y voir une critique envers les qualités de chanteur de Nussbaumer, plutôt le sentiment qu'il chante sur des structures ne semblant pas lui convenir. On peut aussi reprocher aux chansons de CRYSALID de présenter un peu toutes le même schéma, même sur un terrain dit "progressif". Ainsi, des titres comme "Bewitched" ou "Spirit", dotés de refrains accrocheurs, se démarquent aisément du reste.
L'objectif suivant, pour CRYSALID, consiste à diversifier un peu tout ça et à exploiter à 100 % les capacités de son frontman.
