Que voila un packaging sympathique ! Une belle pochette, présentée façon vieux film, le tout aux allures de productions de la HAMMER des années 60…Séduisant n’est ce pas ?
Avec un nom comme DEATHLIKE SILENCE (nom emprunté à un dialogue de DRACULA, mais qui est aussi une vieille chanson de SODOM !), on pourrait penser que nous avons affaire à la dernière digression d’un obscur combo de Death/Black Finlandais, que nenni !
Mais de Metal mélodique, oui ! Un Metal fortement teinté de gothique nordique, avec un fort parfum de NIGHTWISH en moins pompeux, avec une goutte de 69 EYES, la voix caverneuse en moins.
Et justement, la voix de Ms Maya (les pseudos aussi sont sympas !) est quant à elle veloutée, puissante, fort bien posée, et très agréable à l’oreille. Il faut avouer qu’en gros, les musiciens sont relativement bons, surtout les guitaristes, qui entre deux riffs d’outre-tombe nous proposent des soli qui n’ont rien à envier à M.MALMSTEEN !
La musique, bien que bien moins originale que le concept (on est loin de DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA au niveau de la complémentarité) n’en reste pas moins distrayante. Parfois enjouée (« Troops Of Armageddon » et son feeling MAIDEN, « Dagon » et son clavier atmosphérique), mais la plupart du temps assez lourde (notamment « Who’s Gonna Bury Me », genre ballade sombre et pesante, ainsi que « Till Death Tears Apart », dans la même lignée), elle reste cohérente, sinon passionnante.
Les deux bonnes surprises de l’album sont, selon moi, « And You Cry » et sa mélodie bien troussée appuyée par un riff qui se veut parfois très entêtant, et qui pourrait bien se frayer un chemin vers le haut des charts finlandais, mais surtout la cover de « Moonlight Shadow » de Mike OLDFIELD, avec son intro franchement marrante que vient perturber une soudaine montée en puissance irrésistible. C’est d’ailleurs sur ce morceau que la voix de la demoiselle Maya se fait la plus éclatante, et loin du pastiche, cette reprise enterre bien des tentatives d’ATROCITY dans le même registre 80’s.
Alors rien à dire de bien négatif sur cette livraison, même si Saturday Night Evil ne me fera pas me lever la nuit, alors considérons la pour ce qu’elle est, un instant récréatif de bon Heavy mélodique comme on peut vouloir en apprécier de temps en temps.
Mais gageons que DEATHLIKE SILENCE est un groupe à voir en concert !
