Il y a des labels de tradition à savoir respecter pour pouvoir apprécier un produit quel qu’il soit. Ainsi, pour les huîtres, l’origine Marennes-Oléron semble un choix plus que pertinent. Il en va de même pour le Hard-FM. Si il est de fort bon ton de se tourner parfois vers des nouveautés qui paraissent alléchantes, les vieilles valeurs restent toutefois une source de satisfaction quasi garantie, même si l’on est pas à l’abri de mauvaises surprises.
Prenez HONEYMOON SUITE par exemple. Lorsqu’on parlait de Hard mélodique dans les années 80, leur nom venait immédiatement à l’esprit, souvent associé d’ailleurs à NIGHTRANGER. Une musique de qualité, des musiciens compétents, tout pour abreuver ses oreilles de musique délicate mais non dénuée de puissance.
Trois albums immanquables, le premier, éponyme, le monstrueux The Big Prize, et le plus controversé Racing After Midnight avaient fait d’eux les dignes successeurs de JOURNEY et autres BOSTON.
Mais malheureusement, à l’instar des excellents BRIGHTON ROCK, le public se détourna progressivement, et des difficultés de stabilité de line-up dans les années 90 usèrent progressivement le combo.
Mais fraîchement reformé autour du noyau central (Ray Coburn, Dave Betts & Gary Lalonde), suite nuptiale nous revient en grande forme avec un album dans la musette, qui rappellera à ceux qui ont la mémoire courte quels orfèvres du Hard-FM ils ont toujours été.
Alors il devient évident à l’écoute de ce sémillant Clifton Hill que si votre désir le plus ardent du moment est de faire le plein de chansons aux refrains imparables dignes de passer sur n’importe quelle station US, vous allez être plus que satisfait.
Les hymnes qui ont fait les beaux jours des radios ricaines il y a 20 ans sont légion, et de petites pépites comme « She Ain’t Allright », « Tired O Waitin’ On You », « The House », « Sunday Morning » et « That’s All You Got » restent des modèles de Heavy-FM sur mesure dont il serait dommage de se passer. Un peu dans l’optique du dernier JOURNEY justement, avec cet équilibre savamment dosé de titres harmonieux, de ballades tendres et de morceaux plus costauds, Clifton Hill touche le centre de la cible avec une aisance effarante.
On remarque au détour des pistes des choses un peu plus atypiques, comme le très EXTREME « Riffola », et son break digne de Nuno et ses compères, ou encore le très Heavy « Separate Lives » qui clôture le CD.
Et bien sur, les HONEYMOON SUITE prouvent qu’ils restent maîtres dans l’art de la Blue-song qui tue (« Ordinary », moelleuse mais pas molle du genou pour autant, « Restless », très AOR).
De tout ceci résulte un album plus que plaisant à écouter, avec très peu de morceaux faibles, et on sourit de satisfaction plus d’une fois en savourant des chansons simples et courtes mais qui donnent chaud au cœur.
Oui, parfois, le bonheur c’est simple comme un Clifton Hill…
